Okay I guess I should explain what Hell & Hell mode is for those that don't know.

In the DMC games (even that shitty one DmC) Dante Must Die is generally considered the hardest difficulty in the franchise but DMC4 took it one step further. Hell & Hell mode combines both Heaven & Hell and Dante Must Die modes for a difficulty where EVERYTHING can and will one-shot you even while in Devil Trigger and every enemy is ridiculously fast and basically a bullet sponge.

Oh and the enemies have their own Devil Trigger too, have fun.

Regent of the Mask and the Prototype boss fights in NG3:RE...literally fight the Regent five times in the game. He has almost no recovery frames, no stun frames, and super powerful attacks. The Prototype is tough since the easiest way to beat her is to Steel on Bone her, but the window is too quick for me to do consistently.

Any game that recycles one difficult boss over and over is bullshit.

A recent one is Nier: Automata

To start with if you die during the 45 min. intro you have to start all over again. That makes starting on Hard nearly impossible for first timers as the enemies are so strong they will one shot you through most of the game until you really build up your defense. There is no good in between either because Normal starts to get too easy and it takes awhile before Hard starts to feel really fair

I think Very Hard was just put in to troll people because no matter what you will die in one hit in this mode. This game is also part bullet-hell so its virtually impossible to dodge everything

And not really a spoiler but just in case the end boss is a good 45 min fight from start to finish. Good luck

Incredibly fun game, but the difficulty just seems broken no matter what you choose. A shame because Platinum is usually on point with their difficulties

Isaac - Ultra Hard Challenge Seriously, F this challenge. All floors have Curse of the Labyrinth, Curse of the Lost, Curse of the Maze and Curse of the Blind. Meaning, you don't know what items your picking up, any time you enter a new room you could be teleported to a random room, you can't read the map, all items are unknown, and every floor is twice as big. No hearts drop so the only way to recover health is by picking up health up items.

Its pretty much you redoing the entire game over and over until you find a winning combination.

Trails in the Sky - Hard Mode Now, there is a mode harder than this, but dear god this was frustrating. I was overleveled for every area and still every monster was kicking my ass, I had to die a few times to get bosses to delevel enough so that I could go to the next area and repeat the process.

Street Fighter 4 - Seth Not so much a difficulty as just an insanely hard boss fight on normal to high difficulty. To go along with Seth, I think that unlocking Kliff in GGX2, and beating Shao Khan in MK Trilogy are also way up there. Shin Rugal and Shin Akuma from CvS2 also comes to mind.

FF12 also had some weird difficulty jumps. Some parts of the game were insanely easy, and then you get to the next area and you barely scrape by, only to find out that the area after that was also insanely easy.

yes.... but Abyss had a bug where on earlier versions if you popped the disc out on the world map you could move yourself to a late game area where one of the strongest weapons in the game was placed and your back on top for most of the game.

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together on the PSP - a troll game if I've ever played one.

The most obvious instance are the slew of early escort missions, any of which make FFT's infamous Rafa escort mission seem like a cakewalk by comparison. The escortee is placed perilously close to enemy units with their AI set to 'kamikaze,' while your units start off a mile away during a period in the game where your support abilities are painfully underdeveloped, if they even exist yet at all. There's no strategy involved here; you just keep savescumming and playing the RNG until the dipshit escortee chooses not to kill him / herself in the window of time it takes you to reach them and provide support.

But the real heartbreaking brutality here is how ridiculously unforgiving random encounters are, and how this makes it practically impossible to gain levels outside of scripted fights if you feel like you're starting to fall behind. Take one encounter I had sometime around the start of the 2nd chapter or act or whatever (It's been awhile, so I can't remember the details): an enemy squadron of pure undead knight-type enemies. Now, in FFT, undead enemies have a chance of respawning after three turns; apparently this wasn't trolly enough, and in LuCT that chance is bumped up to a 100 percent certainty. Given how magic starts at 0 in this game, and how expensive purify-undead spells are, it was literally impossible to kill all of the enemies fast enough before one of them respawned, or build up enough magic to cleanse them before getting my ass stomped. In a more general sense, the game almost immediately went from tough-but-winnable to completely unwinnable within the span of a few short story fights sometime in the middle of the second act - enemies completely shrugged off my attacks (all of which struggled to even reach double digits in damage), and with the game offering no viable outside option for me to level my characters (especially when taking into account the story structure which walls you off from most of the rest of the explored world at any given time, and only gives you maybe 1 or 2 spots to farm random fights), I was officially stuck.

The final straw that showed me that this was a troll game was when, midway through the 2nd act or so, a basic revive spell finally became available. Let's put aside the fact that a basic revive spell being withheld that long is already asinine enough; the casting cost was 100 fucking MP. In a game where MP starts at 0 every battle, regenerates very slowly, and expensive potions can't even restore all of the amount necessary to cast it, the divine privilege of restoring a unit to single-digit health costs 100 fucking magic points. That's when I finally threw up my hands and gave up on the game. It doesn't matter how much I crave the Tactics brand of SRPG combat outside of the Tactics series, I'll never give that game the light of day again (and yes, I know that TO came before FFT, but if LuCT is an accurate representation of the progenitor series, it can go fuck itself).
