but nobody ever seems to mention just how unfun, broken and mind crushing the process of just downloading and installing can be? I'm trying to download a whopping total of 2 mods for a game but they seem to break even though I'm doing everything right. They are also supposed to be compatible or so it says on the mod page but now I see it might not be.

Everytiem I try to download mods for just about any game it always breaks the game.

Also I fudged the topic title yes.

Modding is indeed great. However like anything it's only great when it works.

what game? and can you use nexus mod manager?

but yeah, in my experience, some games are harder to get mods working for

What?

If you're modding a game with a decently sized modding community it's about as hard as downloading the mod, and installing it through a mod manager.

If you're modding a game with a more obscure modding community, they usuaully come with instructions on how to install and remove the mod.

Although I don't use it, last I checked steam workshop straight installs mods automatically when you download them.

And yeah, some mods are hard to get to work, sometimes it seems like it works for everyone else's game but yours, but most well rated ones work fine.

But it's worth it.

I know how to use NMM and Steam Workshop(You'd have to be braindead to not), and I'm not new to PC gaming people, but even they don't work all the time or get fucked up somehow by another mod and vast majority of mods don't have a compatibility list.

It's for Stardew Valley and no I can't use NMM but installing it I don't think is the issue, the main page of the mod on Nexus says it's compatible with another mod I want but now it seems that is no longer the case.

It looks like her skin was smoothed with a fucking steamroller.

I feel like that wouldn't jive with the aesthetics of the game.

I wish I actually had a reason to upgrade my PC. I've had mine since 2015 and I'm still playing games on high settings.

I don't know why I would even need anything higher than a GTX 970. Then the CPU is vastly overrated, you don't really see much of an improvement upgrading that. I only have an i5 4790k because I do modern emulators and virtual boxes. Modern games use what they need of the CPU (not a lot) and then they squeeze the rest of it to help the gpu by a tiny bit.

Some people do pay thousands of dollars for unnoticeable improvements, though. 70 fps to 80 fps for $500.

I suppose I should have stated that those are the kinds of people I was talking about. You sound reasonble with your computer, but yeah, it's the dudes that say stuff like "PC Master Race" in public and refuse to play consoles even in a group setting that really makes a bad name for computer game players.

Extreme graphics, extreme customization, extreme performance.
Aaaand they have the worst technological glitches imaginable, the fiddliest settings, and basically no tech support.

Not to mention various multiplayer games are ruined by modders/hackers in way higher rates than on console.

I mainly game on PC (apart from console exclusives) but sometimes the accessibility just allows people to get away with too much in online games.

Assetto Corsa track and car mods are as easy as dragging the mod folder in to the "Tracks" and "Cars" folders respectively.

Modding ease is dependant on the game creator.

Exactly, the highest high, and there are some f***ing awful games to get to mod at all.

Agreed. I play simulation games a lot which are notoriously CPU heavy and they still don't tax my Ryzen 1600 (and not use over 4 cores), the highest end is pretty redundant.

Modding is indeed great. However like anything it's only great when it works.

Which makes it all the more satisfying when it works.

Think game mods are hard? Try fixing a Linux break.

Despite all of the problems with modding, the results, when they work, are entirely worth all of the pain. Even simple things like using reshade can really improve a game over its console version.
