"Man" () is sometimes uses as a loan word from English to mean man, so yes, it's entirely plausible that a Japanese speaker could interpret it that way.

I'm not saying it's very LIKELY, just that it's PLAUSIBLE. You could certainly make an argument for "Saruman" being a way to say "monkey man" even it's not established vocabulary.

By the way, searching for Saruman) on Jisho.org does bring up as the first result an entry for Saruman from LotR. The other results show that (Saruman) is apparently the standard katakana rendering of the given name Salman (e.g. Salman Rushdie).
