Yeah, but in the case of Mohammed, it's a common name in their culture in general. It was before the prophet, and it remained so after him.

Whereas "Allah" is literally the Arabic word for "God". (As in, Arabic-speaking Jews or Christians would likely also refer to God as "Allah".) You wouldn't find the name "Jesus" too offensive, but you'd probably think differently about someone named "God".

There are people named "Jihad" too. I've run into people named "Attilla" also.

"Jihad" seems a bit... weird. I don't see the problem with "Atilla", unless that also has a meaning beyond just "some bad historic guy was called that"?

Well I met these people overseas (never a soldier but worked for the US gov't). Jihad was Saudi and one Attila was from Mongolia I think, the other Attila was from Kazachstan. I was told Jihad (roughly: "struggle") is common on the Arabian peninsula (Saudi, Yemen, Oman) and other places especially among conservative Muslims.

IIRC "Muhammad" is the most common name in the world.

It does seem weird at first but it's all relative. Think of the name "Dolores" which means "suffering" (roughly). That's weird until you learn tradition says it's inspired by the suffering of Mary seeing Jesus on the cross.

Most Americans don't think anything about the meaning of the name, just the sound. I know I didn't until lots of international travel. Other cultures really think more about the meaning.
