Over the weekend, they ran out of money and took an emergency $5 million loan to turn the lights back on.

Their stock, HMNY, had gotten down to under 10 cents a share, and then enacted a 250 to 1 reverse stock split, which brought the value of a share up to $22 each. It immediately began to fall and is already down to 80 cents.

Following running out of money, they blacked out Mission Impossible to every theater except their partners that are called E-ticket theaters. Their plan of "surge pricing" has apparently failed, as their goal now is to block out every "big" movie.

News broke today that Christopher Robin and The Meg would not be viewable on MoviePass, but it quickly went faster than that. Members discovered that (again everywhere except the e-ticket theaters) wherever they looked, it said the theater had no more showtimes today. As of now you simply cannot reserve tickets to any movie.

They banked on people paying for it without using it enough. People did the exact opposite.

I wish I could do that.

"Hey, bank, I need a 5 million dollar loan."
"What? Why?"
"Because I have no money."
"Oh that makes perfect sense here you go."

Yeah, I'm wondering why someone would lend them $5 million.

Their hope was to sell the movie-watching data of its subscribers to advertisers. The major problem is that there is nothing stopping multiple people from using the same account and (in the beginning) you could watch the same movie multiple times.

Basically, the one thing they were dependent on in order to make money (the data) is useless.

With how many small monthly bills people forget about, it was fair to assume they'd get millions of people not even using their service but still paying for it.

Too bad it didn't work out, it sounded pretty neat. I was holding out for a dual membership type of thing where you could get two tickets at once.

Saw 35 movies in my eleven months as a member. Money well spent. Probably will switch to Sinemia even though it isn't as good a deal but I don't really see enough movies to need one movie a day anyways.

It's dangerous to play with stocks like this. Any slightly positive news could result in a massive swing, and that could be disastrous for a short position.

Yeah, but I'm the case of a Moviepass, it was obvious the company was doomed.

There was also the gamble of becoming large enough to dictate ticket prices. That didn't work out either.

Probably not. Everyone would have happily settled into watching a shitton of movies a week later.

The only way this was ever a viable model would be the local "second run" theater offering a monthly pass, assuming the local second-run theater even still exists.
