Turns out that military vehicles from the late 40s weren't really designed with passenger safety in mind.

Im still amazed that the Higgins boat was considered good to use by the US military.

Any vehicle that opens from the front is a bad idea. I get the idea - get as many soldiers out of the vehicle as fast as possible, but even back in the day, someone should have popped up and went Wait, what about cover?

Considering the higgins boat was made of plywood, the only real "cover" would be the soldiers closest to the ramp.

Yeah, and when it opens, theyre fucked. It needed to open from the sides.

Yeah, and when it opens, theyre fucked. It needed to open from the sides.

That... wouldn't have worked well.
The intent is to ram the boat onto shore, pop the ramp, unload, then leave to go get more troops. A side ramp would actually take longer to unload - especially so if it's got a truck or small tank inside.

Like I said, I get the intent. The cost of safety - longer wait times.

When you're taking machinegun fire, you don't really want a longer wait time.

It wasn't necessarily that they couldn't swim kr how bad the water was, the sitting area was completely covered by a roof so if you got stuck under that while the boat was going down you'd have no chance.

Seems like a simple fix would be to make the roof detachable, and line it with styrofoam. When the boat sinks, the roof becomes a large flotation device.

That's where the deathtrap apparently came from. The whole thing is essentially enclosed, apart from the door and a few emergency-exit windows. DUKWs didn't even have a roof when the army was using them.

Thats true. I feel like you would even screw yourself more by having a life jacket on, making it harder to escape the enclosure when under.

See, the intent for warfare use makes sense, especially given the theater they were created for

But they have no place as a tourist creation

After the two Seattle duck accidents over the last decade, I figured another duck boat accident was inevitable but hopefully wouldn't have fatalities. I was wrong. :(

The lawsuit accuses Ride the Ducks of Branson owner Ripley Entertainment and others of ignoring bad weather warnings that day and of knowing that design flaws made the boats susceptible to sinking.

Stopped right there. Why tf would you continue to use them?

I hope those responsible get swirlied to death in a toilet bowl full of piss

Yeah that was before I saw the enclosed nature of the boat and the rough waters. What a shame.

Well by my math 17 dead and 7 injured that means 7 people escaped with no injuries to account for all 31. Holy shit that's a lot of 7's.
