Because D&D don't like his character and so are committed to ruin him in every scene they can.

Stannis is the one true king and Azor Ahai reborn.

Nope. Targaryens lost their claim when Robert rightfully won the throne through conquest.

i mean, the show eventually ruined every single thing that was good about it, but let's not pretend that Stannis wasn't leading himself to his own downfall even before that, or indeed in the books

Book spoiler
Stannis is about to take Winterfell and with that control the north and would have had the backing of Jon if he wasn't killed at the wall. The letter is fake and Stannis is still very much alive.

You guys have it all wrong.

Joffrey was a legitimate king. If not by right of inheritance, then by right of conquest. The moment they put the crown on his head and he was sanctioned, he became the rightful king.

I can't blame D&D for not taking seriously a character who didn't even have his own POV. The show did way more with Stannis than the book has.

the "legitimacy" of royalty, and its succession, is meaningless.

if Stannis doesn't have a strong enough force for people to recognize him as king, then lol @ him.

Robb wasnt a POV either and D&D basically made him a main character. Granted they probably did it for more shock value for the red wedding, but still.
