i'd be interested in buying one if they turn out to be a little bit easier on the senses.

e-ink kindles are amazing for books. There's no strain on your eye whatsoever. It really does feel like you're reading it right out of a book.

The Paperwhite which is an older model but really cheap has an adjustable LED brightness so that you can make it perfectly visible in any light from any angle.

E ink is like those old digital watches. Sharp quality and better than pixels on a tablet.

Plus those things uses little batteries. My kindle only needs a charge every month.

You probably won't.

E-ink displays are very bad at things that are not black and white static images and have the framerate of a power point presentation.

So the things that you can do with them is extremely limited--they will handle anything you want to do reading wise but that's basically all they're good for.

If you buy a more featured one, like a Kindle Fire, it uses a regular LCD/LED display which makes it not optimal for e-reading.

You'll have to make a sacrifice in functionality for a better reading experience.

yeah this is another reason i want one. i only use my tablet for pdfs, so the battery isn't usually an issue, but i'm still charging it after a day of use, usually.

i guess the biggest drawback is that pdfs have so many cool things you can do with them, like highlighting and comments and etc.

Have you tried white text on a black background in a normal reader app?

I've found that to be really easy to handle regardless of the phone I was using it on.

I have the nook. Its great. It has a backlight with night mode. I got mine for $100 when it was on sale for mothers day.

The amazon equivalent is the paperweight but Im not sure if it has night mode. Also, there is an ad version and a non-ad version. Basically there is ads on the screen saver when youre not using the tablet. I also think theres ads when youre browsing, but not when youre actually reading a book. Id double check on it though as Im not 100% sure where else theyll have ads.

All non-Fire Kindles support bookmarks AFAIK, they're just not suitable for things like PDFs, especially interactive PDFs, or digital color comics.

They're great for reading novels and B&W manga though.

The "Special Offers" basically replace the lock screen art with an amazon-sponsored ad.

You are still given "ads" while browsing the store but they're just for other books you might be interested in.

I read from both an e-reader and a tablet. The tablet has the advantage of being able to display pages with white text on a black background. Combine this with a warm light filter app and the tablet is better for nighttime reading right before bed. The light on the Kindle is blueish and it can be annoying if you're reading in a dark environment.

The tablet is also far superior at displaying images, of course.

Otherwise, the Kindle is superior.

One thing to note is that the 8th gen Fire has automatic light filtering that you can set up to be anywhere along the red-yellow spectrum (no blue light) and can set it to automatically start and end at certain times.

I love my Fire, even with the cracked screen. :(

Sounds neat but any tablet can do that, as well. My Nexus 7 uses the Twilight app.
