Iron Man appeared in a lot of games, shows, and toys for kids back then. A lot of people also mistakenly associated the Black Sabbath song with the character even though the Song actually predates the character. The song got a surge of popularity in the 90s because of Beavis and Butthead. So Iron Man was popular, maybe for the wrong reasons, but he was popular.

Tony Stark's Iron Man first appeared in 1963.
The Black Sabbath song was recorded in 1970.

I must have mixed that up in my head. I could have sworn Black Sabbath was older than that. The Song though still has nothing to do with the character.

But yeah, if you asked an adult they'd have no clue. But they'd know who Hulk was, because Hulk had a prime time television show.

Most adults at the time would have only known Hulk from the Ferringno Hulk show which was more like a personal drama featuring Dr. Jekyll than it was a Superhero show the way Linda Carter's Wonder Woman was.

Most children around the 90s would have never watched the Hulk show but would have heard about him through the toy lines which were super popular. Hulk Hands in particular were a huge thing back then.

Iron Man character predates the song by nearly a decade

Hulk Hands came out around late 90s or early 2000s, not early 90s. You're thinking of sock em boppers.

There was a Hulk cartoon in the early 90s that kids watched

Doctor Strange must have been popular at one point, to show up on a Pink Floyd album cover.

Yeah, solid list I think.

Iron Man was known and somewhat popular among COMIC FANS before the film, but not much beyond that bubble. Probably upper B-tier among comics, although the Civil War stuff probably boosted him up a rank in those few years before the MCU.

Hulk, Cap, and the Fantastic Four definitely were ahead of him popularity wise.

Yeah, Iron Man is well known if you know comic books but to people that may have a few comics or watched shows/movies, he'd probably not be in that top echelon.

Think of it like in pro wrestling popularity. Everybody knows Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Steve Austin but someone like Shawn Michaels or Kane is going to be more known by people that watched it for a regular period of time.

To be fair, he showed up in almost every cartoon and video game, as well. He was actually incredibly popular as a guest character in video games, likely because power armor is just fucking awesome.

Also, it's pretty important to recognize that comic fans are pretty much the only people who knew or cared about comic book characters, anyway. It's sort of like saying, "yeah, 1984 is a really popular book, but only among people who read, so it doesn't really count".
