There's basically no reason for a racist to do it and the "victims" might get lucky with a crowdsourced payout. The one that stands out to me the most was one where a Muslim girl in New York claimed that she was assaulted by a group of white men and had her headdress stolen by them. They were all wearing MAGA hats and were chanting "TRUMP! TRUMP!" By this point, quite a few fake hate crimes had been proven a hoax, with those two very particular details being stressed - it got to the point where, if it was claimed that the white aggressors were wearing MAGA hats and chanting "TRUMP!" it was probably fake. I pointed out this detail on this board, and outright said it was a hoax. I was branded a racist, misogynist, Islamaphobe neo-Nazi pretty much immediately.
