Regardless of what was really going on, it gave those involved an easy out, being able to paint it all as "lunatics thinking Hillary is banging kids in a pizza place." Some dude walking in to CPP and firing a few bullets (without injuring anybody, then peacefully surrendering) gave them an example to point at and say "look, these investigations are dangerous." The public perception of Pizzagate became permanently linked to this "Hillary Pizza Sex" idea, so any mention of related questions would just be laughed off at face value and the vast majority of people would be turned away from ever looking into it. Beyond that, I'm not willing to stand behind any particular theory.
