I was thinking about anime and a friend of mine hadn't seen Overlord yet. I told him to premise and he was like, "Oh, so like the first 12 episodes of Sword Art Online? I like the concept but it went to shit quick"

So I started thinking about the genre, and is .HACK the best the genre has done? I've heard good things about Log Horizon but I haven't see that yet...

It's definitely Log Horizon, at least in terms of isekais that involves people diving into the game world. It poses a very realist view of what it means to suddenly live in another world with different powers. Everybody's also immortal, which to a younger audience takes away from the death game survival excitement aspects that SAO and the likes abused to play the market. But it revels in its realistic view, like when people are immortal, what's the point of doing anything? It shows how to motivate people, how to get things done, which involves constantly butting heads with people with influence and a lot of personality. There are a lot of intrigue within the world. The many many characters make a lot of effort to sorta figure out their situation and the world, which is now different in many ways than what they remember. I enjoyed it a lot, but it's definitely not a full-on action series and is very anti-shounen in its pattern.

But if you're talking all Isekais, I have a lot of differing opinions but I think people who post in the Japanese culture related generals are pretty much tired of me rambling about those lul

Does No Game No Life count? What about Konosuba? Those are the only "normal person/people sucked into a fantasy/game world" anime that I've seen and really liked.

the original game series is easily my favourite thing related to the genre. i wasn't super into Sign when it aired in Canada, though, not enough action for young me.

It's Re:Zero because it's about a NEET who thinks he's gonna be the isekai hero only to be repeatedly fucked over and over until he starts to snap.
