In all of DBZ? SPOILERS

A man comes and attacks Earth's strongest heroes. He is defeated, Goku dies, but Piccolo lets out of the bag that Goku will be revived by a wish from the Dragon Balls. That man laughs cause his two buddies heard about the power of the Dragon Balls, and they will come in a year.

Train for a year.

Those two guys show up (Nappa and Vegeta) and kill a few of Earths defenders. Ultimately good guys win the day. They want to wish back everyone, but some of them can't be. They hear about more Dragon Balls on a planet called Namek. So, they go there to get them.

When they show up (sans Goku), they find that a universal warlord named Frieza is also looking for the Dragon Balls. So is Vegeta, who is recovered. So, it is a three team race between Frieza and his troops, Vegeta, and Earths Defenders.

Vegeta and Earths Defenders whittle down some of Frieza's troops. Frieza orders in the Ginyu Force, the strongest fighting force in the world. This cause Vegeta and Earths Defenders to join forces, so at least it will be just 3 on 5. Ginyu Force beats the holy fuck out of them, but then Goku joins the fight. Ginyu Force is dispatched.

They eventually wish back Piccolo, who fuses with a local Namekian and becomes very strong. We find out the dragon can grant three wishes. So, cool!

Frieza decides to fight finally, kills Vegeta, maims Piccolo, and kills Krillin. Throughout the arc, we've been hearing about the Super Saiyan, a Saiyan that is supposed to be super powerful. Frieza fears this, and with the death of Krillin, Goku is enraged and turns SSJ! He destroys Frieza, but has no way off the planet as it explodes. Frieza knew he was likely to lose and set to blow up the planet as his fail-safe. Second wish was to revive everyone killed by Frieza, and the third wish was to move everyone alive off the planet.

Wait, Goku is NOT dead! He is traveling the universe on the way home, having found a working space ship. A year later he returns, but not before Frieza (who was still alive after the planet exploded, but had to be pieced together with robotic parts) and his father do. A different Super Saiyan shows up randomly and just annihilates them both. Goku then returns a few hours later, and they talk. We find out that this SSJ kid is Trunks, the son of Vegeta. He is from the future, and tells the Z-Warriors that in a few years time, 2 powerful androids will show up and basically destroy the world. So, for those years, they all train in prep.

I could go on, but basically the whole story usually is, "Big strong bad comes around, Z Fighters train/transform and beat big bad"
