It's not fun beating up enemies with sticks that break after a few hits.

Mastersword doesn't, but it "runs out of energy" and has a 10 minute cooldown when that happens.

You get stronger weapons later on but they all break.

after a while you can hold enough weapons that it doesnt really matter that they break. I hate the mechanic though.

You eventually have so many weapons it doesn't even realistically matter

Yeah, it reeks of Nintendo logic.

Everyone always says "Well, Nintendo did that so you'd use a variety of weapon types."

But let's be honest, the correct way to do that is to make certain enemies weak or vulnerable to certain weapons, not just make all of the weapons break.

The current system basically sees the player stockpiling whatever weapon they work best with, in my case I usually stock pile swords so I can still use my shield, and maybe one great sword that is strong as fuck for when I run across a mini boss or something.

Nope. At least nothing I ever came across.

The weapon/shield breakage is the biggest reason (but there's others) the game hovers in the 6-7/10 range instead of what could have been like a 9.
It's a massively bad mechanic that really ruins things.

The system isn't there to promote variety, the system is there in an attempt to prevent someone from just going to Hyrule castle at the start of the game, stealing end game loot, and then having the rest of the game be easy mode.

There were still better ways to stop this, though.

I don't mind that the weapons break, but it just feels like they all break so quickly that I spend all this time in the menu just switching them out. Especially because you can carry so many, it's true it didn't matter if they broke. So I'd let em break, switch, break switch over and over.

It's a cool mechanic but I just wish they'd balanced it a bit better. Also, I wish they gave you the option to hold on to your broken weapons and get them repaired somehow. It's not like it would make the game any easier because holding on to a bunch of broken weapons would be useless and take up slots till they're repaired. So I think having that option would have been cool

that's disgusting in its own way, and definitely goes against the game's direction of a focus on "freedom", the best way to do it is just offer an insane amount of weapons that are all different and fun to use in their own right so you just naturally want to try them all

this would also defeat

because instead of weapons being mostly differentiated by their attack stats you could differentiate them by their capabilities

Be really, really, really good at the game. You have to complete something called Trial of the Sword, which requires you to go through a gauntlet of enemy and boss battles with none of your equipment, just items you find along the way.
