Over the course of 15 films, they featured crossovers with other giant monsters, supernatural elements, Godzilla's gradual conversion from villain to hero, multiple alien invasions, recurring allies and adversaries including a three-headed arch nemesis, the adoption of a son, an island of monsters which would be established as Godzilla's home, and a robotic doppelganger. That sounds like a film franchise based off of a comic book character -- except there's no comic book. The films are the source material. And the original series has more or less been the blueprint for all subsequent continuities.
