The original series ran from 1954 to 1974. Over the course of 15 films, they featured crossovers with other giant monsters, supernatural elements, Godzilla's gradual conversion from villain to hero, multiple alien invasions, recurring allies and adversaries including a three-headed arch nemesis, the adoption of a son, an island of monsters which would be established as Godzilla's home, and a robotic doppelganger.

That sounds like a film franchise based off of a comic book character -- except there's no comic book. The films are the source material. And the original series has more or less been the blueprint for all subsequent continuities. Nearly every monster from the original series has returned in some capacity whereas none of the characters who originated in the 80s, 90s, or 00s have ever returned.
