It has been over a decade since I last played that game but I recall that there was one thing that made me wonder what the fuck was going on.

So after you do the introduction reactor and go back to the slums, everybody exits that train. Now there's a couple or something by the streetlight before you exit that screen to the left. If you talk to them they begin talking like weirdos and I think after a few more talk prompts they say some shit like, "I'm gonna do it tonight" and they both fall down for no reason.

What even was that?

Here's another thing, Honey Bee Inn allows you to look through keyholes of some rooms. In one of them you have President Shinra apparently dressed like a weirdo and doing some occult bullshit. Like he's full on trying to summon Satan.

FF7 was fucking nuts.

The first thing is super oddly specific and something you can easily miss since it happens once. But if you want you can play the game right now and see what I'm saying. It's like within the first 30 minutes of gameplay if you speed through the intro reactor or turn off random battles.

I think that's a big reason why FF 7 and other games around that era hold such a special place in people's hearts, mine included. Games were getting just big enough to have sizable budgets and fancy graphics, but not yet such a tightly-wound industry that they couldn't afford to play it loose. FF 7 was weird, quirky, off-the-wall, took plenty of risks, and was at times very ambiguous or even confusing...at that's what made it so memorable for so many people. This is why, despite the overall tightness of its production, FF 9 didn't have the same magic as other entries in the series for me personally, simply because it played things too safe.

Anyway, as to TC's first query, it's been so long since I've played, but didn't those NPCs make sort of a drinking motion before falling down? I was always under the impression that they hit the bottle heavy and immediately passed out.

What a...revelatory post. Anyway, 6, 7 and Tactics are also 'widely regarded' as the greatest FF, depending on who you ask (if you were asking me, I'm a diehard 6 fan, and whether or not you recognize my screenname is a prime indicator of how long you've been with the series). Incidentally, I don't dislike 9, I actually love it, even if it never took me to the emotional heights that other entries did (with the exception of the Assault of the Silver Dragons scene).

Anyway, I debated whether or not to throw in that line in my original post, and even though it was fun getting in a few triggers, I shouldn't have made it because it will clearly derail the topic: this board in particular is hyper sensitive when you criticize 9. Which is kind of why I've built up a little bit of disdain for the subject; 9 is one of those technically-sound games where there's not a lot to rip into, which is why I think so many internet types have gravitated towards it: the fewer the obvious flaws, the less they have to defend their love of the game against others. Try loving 10 and then having to deal with the inevitable dipshit posting the Tidus Laughing clip every time.

If they were, it worked on me.

Also, with mentioning FFIX, one thing that kinda throws me off is that yes, it does have tons of references to old school Final Fantasy. Despite that, it's probably one of the few Final Fantasy games up until then to not let you custom-build your characters however you wanted. Lots of people complain about stuff like that, but it's kind of a staple of Final Fantasy games to let you customize every character however you want. Aside from FFIX, the only other game I can think of that did that before FFIX was FFIV. So despite being such an homage to the FF series, having the characters be stuck with their classes kinda goes against that.

Actually, the series started alternating between "job system" games and "fixed class" games.
FF1: while you can't change their jobs, you get to pick them at the beginning.
FF2: Characters are fixed in their class. Frionel is a knight, Maria is a mage, Guy is a martial artist, Leonheart is... a dragoon? A dark knight? (I haven't played this yet, so I don't know for myself).
FF3: Onion knights? First changeable jobs system.
FF4: Fixed classes again.
FF5: Jobs system. I think there are some differences in their base traveler classes.
FF6 had fixed classes, but after everyone can learn and use magic, they seem to look similar, unless you focus more on their individual abilities.

This topic has reminded me I still need to play the retranslation.

I spent hours upon hours restarting FFVII just to see all the optional NPC dialogue that's super easy to miss. You only have a second or two to catch some of it, like when they're all running into town and if you miss it you don't get another chance. Some of it is pretty interesting and/or weird, yeah.

thats not correct at all
ff2 has no fixed class system you and IIRC guy is the only one that starts with magic

you get stronger by using things
if you attack a lot you will be good at attacking
if you use magic a lot you will get better at using magic
if you get hit a lot you will have high HP

its a weird system but one that lets you customize each character anyway you want
also maria starts off geared towards being an archer than a mage (you get better with each weapon individually )

FF2 doesn't really have "classes", per se. Your characters have slightly different base stats and starting equipment, but from then on, their stats increase on the basis of what you have them do, except some things are overtuned, some undertuned, and most of it is unintuitive.
FF2 is janky as hell.

In FF5, your party members have discreet base stats which are altered(but not overwritten!) when they change classes. It's negligible, but it's there. Also, the stats of the base class(Bare/Freelancer) improve based upon how many and which classes a character has mastered, and certain abilities "carry" stats.

Nah. That's not true and never has been. The job system isn't used as often as people think it is, either.

3, 5, X-2, 13 series, and the MMOs are the only main series titles with job systems.

All the rest are either fixed jobs or develop your own character type stuff.

The job system is used more frequently in spinoff type stuff since that's the easiest way to attach final fantasy associations to it. Tactics / TA / Bravely Default / Mobius / etc.
