I know that just makes me sound old and curmudgeonly, and I don't mean to imply that things used to be better or anything like that exactly, I just can't stand how we've become so used to being able to select our peer groups and channels of communication that we never need to challenge ourselves intellectually especially when we want to be seen as intellectual (or woke or whatever)

Is a hot take just when you have an opinion on something soon after it happens? Pretty much. It's when someone goes off on a recent topic/event without putting much thought into what they're saying or gathering any kind of evidence for the sake of getting their opinion out there quicker. More often than not it's at best factually incorrect and at worst wrong AND offensive because it's usually an emotionally-charged response. --- Buffalo Bills 2018-19 Season Prediction: 5-11 Change my mind ... Agreed. The quality of the news in general has taken a sharp decline due to every last mouthbreather being able to get their banal thoughts out to others, basically diluting the amount of quality information. It's basically just refined propaganda at this point.

I don't think the ability to control whom you associate with is a new thing Well I mean, it definitely is from an evolutionary standpoint. It's only very recently in human history that we've had stuff like cars, planes, and trains so for most of the rest of the time people have been stuck in place and that means stuck with people. But for more recent history, I would say any time before IRC was a thing was very different than now with respect to who your peers are. And even then, messengers and chat rooms, and then xanga and livejournal, didn't really allow for the kind of constant information sharing between people who don't actually know each other that we have now I'm not saying that is necessarily a bad thing but you certainly have more options today about who you interact with, which arguably means it is much easier to manage the ratio of people who disagree with you vs people who agree with you in your social(?) circle --- But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. ...
