I remember going to Blockbuster/Hollywood Video to rent games just to check what monster I would get or borrow games from friends to get one lol. The tournaments would become insanely difficult and it would always suck when one of your guys died, but man it kept me coming back. No disc swapping but instead had these adventure type missions which was a really cool change of pace. Was like dice rolls or something IIRC. If you're looking to emulate one I'd shoot for that one.
