I'm referring to the people displaced by automation, genius.

lmfao which people exactly? surely you have evidence to give alongside this blabbering.

you realize that automation isn't going to happen overnight right?

And when it does happen, what do you suggest accountants, pharmacists, technical writers, truck drivers, etc. do to sustain themselves?

How do you think automation will affect those people and on what timeline? And what is the evidence?

Short answer is get new jobs.

Like, this is like asking what should Blacksmiths, Scribes, Semaphorists, and Milkmen do to sustain themselves.

What will those new jobs be, and will those new jobs be generated in proportion to the rate of displacement?

For example, Seeing as truck drivers are also partially mechanics, they could get jobs not driving, but doing maintenance on the automated trucks and being responders when one breaks down on the road. They will also likely be watching trucks regardless as every it nobody is in the truck, you will likely want people watching it with cameras inside the vehicle.

As far as created in proportion to the rate of displacement, there's always going to be new opportunities when old ones close up.

Lots of jobs today didn't exist 50 years ago and there's no reason to believe we won't have new types of jobs as time goes on.

Is there reason to believe you'd need one mechanic for every truck?

You don't have a driver for every truck so this is a meaningless statement. Lots of trucks are doing nothing at any given time but they all need maintenance.

Don't those trucks still need maintenance now? Where are the mechanics going if the former truck drivers are going to do their jobs? And maintenance automation still applies here, too.

They're not driving. There's a shortage of drivers and it's been that way for years.

If trucks were automated, deliveries could be made more often and faster using the same labor pool we have now.

For example, the cotton gin was invented to reduce the amount of slaves needed by letting plantation owners produce the same amount of cotton with fewer slaves. It had the opposite of it's intended effect as once the slave owners saw that a fewer amount of slaves could produce the same amount of cotton, they just made the other slaves work to produce more cotton and going more slaves to produce even more.

The cotton gin by the way automated a very tiny part of the cotton harvesting process where the had to pluck seeds out of the cotton fibers.

@FLUFFYGERM, do you think there will be any jobs automation will not take over?

Such as writing stories, making games, films, tv shows?

Can't speak for Fluffygerm, but I don't think robots will ever take over for sports. It's not that I don't think they can, it's just that I don't think there will ever be an interest in a market for it. It'd be like going to EVO and having a 100% AI tournament.

Tyran, do you not see the issue of asking a low skill driver to become a mechanic? Do you not understand that it isn't 1:1 and that the floor required is harder to get to due to education being expensive?

Education is only expensive if you delay it and try to make yourself relevant after stagnating. If you keep up with your certifications and the latest and greatest in your industry, you'll always have good work.

none of that refutes what i said. stop conflating education with college and stop letting the government guarantee tuition. then the cost of college will decline.

learning new skills is a lifelong activity that extends far beyond undergrad.

How else do you expect a person to concisely acquire the skills needed to jump ship from being a truck driver to a self-driving car mechanic?

You aren't addressing any of the huge pitfalls with this. We could be talking about a person who is years or decades out of schooling who would need to know a lot of things about software and new-age car mechanics to have any chance of being a repairman for self-driving cars.

It requires higher education. Higher education costs a lot of money and those costs are increasing. It's plausible that some positions may permit pay that gives them the money to do this (ergo; some drivers may be paid well), but that isn't necessarily true depending on location and the size of their family and for the likes of Uber, Bus, or Taxi Drivers certainly isn't the case.

You are not thinking about the logistics of this. You're not providing good examples of how your reality would come about. You're handwaving the fact that automation is an enormous double edged sword when it comes to low skilled labor and the economic implications that has for a large number of people in society.
