Downs, or any other mental handicap.

Might be a silly question, but some people have strong feelings about fighting against people with mental deficiencies, since they don't have a full grasp on the situation, consequences, and/or their own strength.

Yes.

Their brain is likely still thinking "hurt the other person." My right to live and not be crippled isn't trumped by theirs.

Visibly disabled? I'm not sure. If they were repeatedly attacking, yes.

I did in elementary school. This one heavily autistic kid (not that I knew that then) spit on me while we were playing football, so I started walking away, but then decided to charge full speed and Goldberg spear him.

Honestly? Absolutely not. Same way I wouldn't fight a young child if he was attacking me. A person with Down Syndrome doesn't have the intellect and emotional intelligence to 100% grasp the magnitude of what he's doing (assuming he attacked me for zero reason) so I couldn't fight back. I'd probably try to restrain him though and get him to calm down. If for some reason my life was in danger, like he had a knife on him or something I'd fight back because my life was in danger. But if the worst case is that I'd get a couple of bruises or a bloody lip from him swinging/flailing his arms at me, it wouldn't be enough to make me get into a serious fight with him. So no.

Like I mentioned in my post, IF my life were at risk I would defend myself. But TC's question was to fight him if he attacked me and I assumed he meant bare fists, no weapons. Like punching, kicking, grappling, etc. In that case I would definitely not fight back.

If it was escalating irrationally and i saw it coming the whole time, i might just try to pin him down. If he blindsided me or i didn't have time to really think things thru.... he's catching some hands.

Yes. Someone posted this on CE when it was new. What subreddit?

r/whatcouldgowrong

But it was removed because it broke one of the rules about fighting and children being harmed. But I still have the thread:

I'm not a fighter like at all so I would try to get away more than anything. If I had no escape then yeah I'd try to defend myself regardless of who the attacker is.

This. Besides self-defense, there's no excuse for violence. A handicap is no exception.

Yeah, your topic title can't really be compared with the situation the dad was confronted with in the video. He definitely didn't see the guy properly, and if someone laid hands on my kid he'd also get roughed up badly. I wouldn't waste time trying to figure out if he was mentally unstable, no one touches my kid.
