Now that I live alone in my own house, I got a new kitten so my current cat will have some company while I go to work. Its been all hisses and fury swipes from my cat so far.

Shes gotten along great with my downstairs neighbors cats in my previous apartment so she DOES have cat experience, might be because shes the alpha in this house now, where before she was entering my neighbors cats house.

It would have been ideal to introduce them on neutral territory before bringing them both home. Helps a little bit.

I really hope they turn the corner, the kitten is such a loveable, well behaved cat.

I went with a kitten because I assumed my cat would be like Aw its just a baby, hes not a threat, but nope.

Play with them together, mix their scents by rubbing a towel on one then the other.

You should have done a slow introduction. Give them an item the other has rubbed against, then have them smell each other throw a door. Open it and observe.

When I got a second cat, the first did not like her at all. To the point where we thought he might kill the kitten if left alone.

We wound up putting the kitten in a large dog kennel with blankets over the side for privacy and a small space where they could see eachother. It took like 2 weeks of this before they started to ignore eachother. Then another few days of supervised interaction before they became friends.
