"The Christian thing to do would be to welcome illegal immigrants."

Why should anybody care about the Christian thing to do or what Jesus would do? That's not a real argument. I'm an atheist.

Its almost as if youve missed the entire history of this country where significant portions of the voting base justifies their opinions and therefore votes using religion.

Who is under 50 years old and devoutly religious other than Chris Pratt?

...what?

Trying to use religion in a political argument just to appeal to the other side isn't going to work because they're all baby boomers who are set in their ways.

Generally this is an argument you use with someone who has already used their religious beliefs to justify support for one issue while conveniently ignoring those same beliefs in regards to another issue. It's unlikely someone would present this argument to an atheist.

Doing so is terrible and wrong. The US is just as bad as any Muslim majority country, because of their ass-backwards religious beliefs.

This, basing your political argument on religion to a non-believer would already get people to shrug you off.

But if people get their values from religion then why should they not cite that religion when explaining their values? Or why should they not vote based on their own values just because theyre formed from religion?

Because religions are wrong and give people bad values. It's 2018, time to stop acting like we're in the fucking Bronze Age.

Ok good luck convincing everyone to just give up their religion

Thankfully I've gotten a few. Sadly, there are tons of people who are so terrified of their own mortality that they'll never step away from childish fairy tales.
