I encountered this thawing out feature in one of the new games and was wondering if anyone remembers whether it was in red and blue? Because I can't remember my pokemon or anyone else's being able to get out of FROZEN status, making it an even better status ailment than SLEEP at the time.

I don't think so. I think it was pretty much a death sentence without a full heal or equivalent.

I could swear that using a fire attack on a frozen Pokmon would thaw them... at least in Pokmon Stadium. Its been a while though.

Yes that I think might have happened with my charizard but no pokemon was able to get out of FROZEN status by themselves right? Which ideally would make it more ideal in catching pokemon that SLEEP of pokemon was logical (I think the percentage of success is still higher with SLEEP than a pokemon literally being frozen in place... and somehow the pokeball still misses)

In Gen 1, once you're frozen, you're frozen forever

Bulbapedia says...
Generation I
Once frozen, a Pokmon cannot be thawed out in battle other than via the use of items such as an Ice Heal, being hit by a damaging Fire-type move that can inflict burn (i.e. any Fire-type move except Fire Spin), or the opponent using the move Haze.

Yeah, the only way out was to have your opponent stupidly decide to use one of the few moves that would negate it.

^ ^ Not really compared to a one hit kill which you could already do with an alakazam or mewtwo what with their high special stat and use of psychic.

The benefit would be more for catching pokemon, especially tough pokemon that you don't want to waste a masterball on, if it weren't for the fact that despite being frozen solid it still doesn't improve your chances significantly.

The only to get unthawed in Gen 1 was for the opponent to use a Fire attack, or use Haze.

Otherwise, you're screwed.

It also has to be a fire type move that could inflict burn. Fire Spin for instance wouldn't thaw out your pokemon.

A lot of people seem to really hate freeze, but is it honestly any worse than sleep now? It lasts up to five turns too IIRC, and at least theres no Freeze Powder move or whatever. Would a move that did damage and had a ~30% chance of sleep be broken?

Nope. Cloyster and Articuno used to rock worlds back then.

Er that's a bit of a hyper ball isn't it? I mean isn't the chance of even getting FROZEN status like 5% ?

lol, took me a sec to figure out what you meant by "hyper ball". I don't know the proc percentage, but it was still devastating when it hit. Either way, iirc, Cloyster's defenses allowed him multiple attempts, for sure.

Hmm perhaps. I just remember cloyster was weak to a lot of moves in gen 1 that had high attack. Never thought of him as a threat when everyone had an electric type and there were so many grass types. Or was it fire? One of the 2 probably
