With the end of neutral nets isn't that the end game? You pay for the internet, and then pay an additional fee to just access the website?

In a lot of ways it seems like they intentionally make the free service terrible to push people toward the pay service. It's not subtle.

The ads are becoming way more aggressive. Mandatory 30 second ads, come the fuck on

My son watches a lot of YouTube and I'm pretty shocked at how long some of the ads are. It's not unusual to have 10-15 minute ads pop up in the middle of the show he's watching. Sometimes it's like a whole other show disguised as an ad.

These are always skippable, but they show up when he's watching little kid shows. A lot of kids wouldn't know how to skip them.

I agree the ads are ridiculous. The ratio between videos and ads is about 1:1, and has been for a long time. One time, I saw some of a 20 minutes ad. I couldn't believe it. Of course, I skipped most of it when I saw how long (or more to the point, boring) it was.

I'm surprised that a rival service hasn't popped up yet.

Basically. And it shows they are trying to change that or at least minimise it with everything they're doing of late.

There's plenty of rival services (Vimeo, etc) but the key selling proposition for youtube is its user-created content, and no matter how good a platform pops up its never going to be able to compete on that basis until people leave youtube

There absolutely is no rival service to youtube which is downright bizarre when you consider the vastness of the internet.

But the fact of the matter is even at their prime a decade ago, dailymotion, metacafe, vimeo and others could not hope to compare to youtube. Even when they were something resembling good video sites, they simply weren't youtube. And now they're awful and worse than even youtube, if not outright defunct.

It's so weird to see an actual monopoly. An oligopoly is one thing, but an outright monopoly? Wow.

Well they'd have to compete against the Google conglomerate.

I hardly use the site anymore. All my favorite gaming personalities and content creators have moved over to Twitch fulltime while YT is pretty much just used as a place to dump clips and vods for preservation. That's all it's good for these days.

What's really funny though is how spoiled we were. When youtube announced they would stop buffering the entire video I thought that was the worst thing youtube could ever do.

Oh ho ho ho how wrong I was there... it's almost laughable.

Yeah I had the same thought many other media formats had some form of competition but YouTube hasn't had any real direct challenge.

I've had 8+ minute ads on 12 second videos

And then people wonder why adblock is so popular

^ Hey now that's completely unfair.
