definitely is ime

i hear soooo many questions and complaints made by people regarding others that could very easily be answered by just taking a few seconds to think about why those others might be doing what they're doing or why they're the way they are

Absolutely. It seems like the majority of people are completely incapable of viewing things from more than one perspective (their own).

Like, any time someone is telling me a story they're always the victim and the other person was so very clearly in the wrong. Then I'm just like "Uhuh, uhuh" but in the back of my mind I know that's not how it went down haha. Then I imagine the person they had the confrontation with telling people the same thing. Two completely opposite, one-sided stories.

True empathy is extremely rare. Inept self-centered half-assed empathy is more common.

And even beyond all that, a lot of people's empathy is super conditional and there's a long list of things that can have someone's empathy revoked for a person.

Part of the reason it's rare is that it gets taken advantage of.

Manipulative users are natural predators of compassionate people. And the introduction of the internet only made it easier for them...

So more and more modern households stop prioritizing it as a value to teach their children.
They don't want their kids getting taken advantage of by crooks and used by selfish manipulators.

I think there's still a lot of empathy in the world. I just don't think there was such an altruistic time as some people like to imagine there was to compare today to.

guys, i'm referring to "empathy" as in the ability to put yourself in another's shoes and see things from their perspective

not sympathy or compassion or whatever else

i know a lot of people tend to mix them up and/or think of them as synonymous, but you can be empathetic without being sympathetic, and sympathetic without being empathetic

Yes. People are animalistic and selfish by nature. Nothing short of genetic alteration/removal will change this.

Empathy is also a part of human nature. Without it, we couldn't function and our entire species would die out.

can't say for sure about the empathy thing. just know how it feels to be witnessing the other side of the fence when others can't make ends meet :(
