To be honest the bigger difference is between people who know how to look for stuff online and those who don't. I've never replaced a toilet but I'm like 99.9% sure I could do it after a few searches.

Yup, not a car guy at all, but when my check engine light came on, I was able to diagnose and replace a faulty oxygen sensor with the help of Youtube, Google and Amazon, something I would never have done pre-internet.

See, most people would have just assumed the problem was beyond them and not even tried. I think people just underestimate their ability to learn new things. I mean it's not that they're stupid, they just don't even try because they think they are.

You just have to allow yourself a period where you feel overwhelmed with the info and be confident that it will eventually click.

I did some work with a contractor installing ethernet cabling for a while.

I also got a fair amount of experience wiring up various things like motors, control panels, electrical sockets, etc. when I worked at a plant nursery and they were building a bunch of new greenhouses. Myself and 3 others basically built 7 automated greenhouses by hand from scratch in the little over a year I was there.

Cooking. Best in the family at it if I'm being honest.
Minimal electrical, plumbing, construction. Enough to (attempt to at least) keep up my old house. It's 63 years old. You need to learn stuff yourself otherwise you will go broke calling repair men.

This is true to an extent. However sometimes it comes down to feeling like its worth it to pay an expert to take care of something right rather then taking the time to learn and teach yourself how

I'm envious of all the people with "general handyman" skills, haha. I have a tendency to only bother learning or getting good at stuff that I will actually use on a regular basis. So other than cooking, there's not much.

If shit ever hits the fan in a major way those that have general/practical skills that can be used for survival will manage just fine I think.

I am a pretty strong swimmer and I have some basic/advanced gardening skills.

So, I guess I could find work at a plant nursery or something. That would honestly be a pretty cool job (I think...)

I also have basic skills with household tools and I can do typical DIY projects. Same with welding. Neither of those skills are certified and I would need training to find employment with them.

My only plumbing experience was when I accidentally flushed my deodorant down and the snake wouldnt get it out. I had to take the toilet off, bring it outside (downstairs), fix it, and then reinstall it without screwing up the seal. I managed to get it in one try.

I put general handyman along with my actual licensed electrician just because some things bleed over.
Most, not all, things can be fixed by troubleshooting.
However, knowing when you're beyond your skills or knowing when a pro is needed is equally valuable.
It never hurts to learn, but know when to pick up the phone.
Edit: Mostly dead boards in sig, but I keep an eye on them. You can always ask there or CE, there's people here that can either help you or direct you to quality forums if you'd like to DIY

Now when it gets to skinning or field-dressing, I admit I'd be lost.

Maybe electrician crosses over into construction a bit but the reverse is absolutely not true, Ive seen builders get electrocuted and I have a healthy fear of wiring
