As someone not really into horror, ravenholm doesn't really appeal to me and is a sad blemish on an otherwise great game

Nah it was one of the better parts of the game.

I'm not a big fan of HL2 though. I thought the first game was much better.

It was somewhat out-of-place but, being able to use the gravity gun (or whatever it's called) to carry sawblades around and split everything in half?

I wouldn't give that up for anything.

D it's not my favorite, but I enjoy the contrast between Ravenholm and the rest of the game. I also like all the little physics traps they give you to play with. HL2 still has great physics, even compared to modern games.

I like both Water Hazard and Highway 17 quite a bit. The chapters I don't much care for are Follow Freeman and Anticitizen One

It's too empty and waaay too long. Highway 17 is the same way, but at least it has the bridge segment.

First-person shooter: shoehorns puzzles to show off a physics engine and vehicle sections because ...I don't know why, spectacle? because they could? along with clumsy platform sections [because Valve]. They were mechanical and tonal shifts that broke up the already glacial pacing. The first Half-Life moved along at a faster nip but even then it was too pleased with itself for having its scripted sections and would slow down far too often.

A lot of this for me is irritation due to having grown up with faster, pre-Half-Life fps games, the Quakes, Dooms and Unreals. To then have the style of fps games almost completely shift to copy Valve's approach made me extra salty with fries.

Portal seems to be the game Valve always wanted to make. Making a straightforward first-person shooter seems to be something they are, and were reluctant to do. Thankfully [for me] there are still mods being made for games like Quake such as Arcane Dimensions and I can always replay Unreal - which had the exploration, but without the slowdown of Half-Life.

A limited ammunition, more survival based game in the vein of Ravenholm could be fascinating. They'd only fuck it up though by shoving puzzles and platforming in it.

Liking a section [or game] that others hate is a bit of an odd space to inhabit and there are games where I'm the same as you. Trying to bring people round to your understanding is a waste of time though. Just enjoy the bits you do and rile up some responses in the process.
