Damn, that was pretty freaky. I wasn't really satisfied with the ending of the game, but when all the not-quite-right stuff started happening, that was a really good one. Just this slow tension build.

Opening drawers in Rule of Rose. It's not even that scary, but it got me every time.
In Night in the Woods, going investigating with Angus and he tells you that huge long story while star gazing and then the camera shifts back to where you two are sitting and he eventually says 'There's a guy over there.' And you don't notice it because of the misdirection from the story but then you look and holy shit it's the scary ass guy you were chasing, just standing nearby watching you and that was terrifying.
Silent Hill: Downpour. Getting changed into new clothes right near the beginning and looking over between two shacks you can see the black silhouette of a figure glide behind them. I don't know why, but humanoids that slide around instead of walk are so goddamn freaky.

The tub in Eternal Darkness and the dentist in Bioshock are the things that made me jump the hardest in a game.

In terms of non-jumpscares, any large underwater freaks me out. The sewer boss in Shadows of the Empire is a good example (hell, the angler fish in Link's Awakening even bothered me).

yeah, the game did a fantastic job building up tension.

I actually appreciated the anticlimax. If success in writing a game is making the player feel what the character is feeling, it succeeded completely.

Henry is supposed to feel disappointed and reminded of his responsibilities by the end of the game.

I'm just glad that in my version of events, Julia doesn't forget Bucket when he dies.

That jumpscare the best example of ED's approach to horror, and I fucking love it.

I actually appreciated the anticlimax.

I feel like Night in the Woods did it better, and I had just played through that a little bit before Firewatch, so maybe that kinda spoiled me on that kind of ending.

Y'know what my favorite little part of Firewatch was, that every time you leave the watchtower, you put your hand up on the ceiling/floor on the stairs and duck down so you don't whang your head on it. It was like saying bye to a friend or something with that one little animation they didn't have to add in. I never replayed with director's commentary, I wonder if they mention that. That plus the fact that yours is the only human face you see in the whole game. Really added to the feeling of isolation.

To add some more to the topic

Giant Slaughterfish lair in Oblivion. Swim down this random water-filled crack in the floor of a cave and aaaaallll the way down to a tiny little hole that opens up to a really claustrophobic underwater cavern with this big ass toothy fish getting all in your face ARGH. Underwater bleh!

in fatal frame 2 when an invincible "instakill you if she touches you" ghost chases you through a section of a house and you have to go like down a bunch of hallways and through several rooms to get away and solve a puzzle

I panicked the first time I played that part

This is gonna sound weak, but that one mission in A Hat in Time. You know the one. The one where you have to go through the manor and that shadow lady chases you.

Out of curiosity, when she first appeared I just walked up to her to see what would happen.

Noped the fuck right out of the game after that. I decided I wasn't gonna go for 100% after all.

Honestly I get scared real easily in video games, actually scratch that, in general. I can't do horror games or films at all.
