This will be her 5th heart surgery, the third for congestive heart failure. Doctors say her heart is currently operating at 15% capacity. She needs to go to a different hospital to do the surgery, her lungs are filling with fluid, and they're not sure she'd even survive the trip. She lives over 500 miles away so it's gonna take me a bit to get there as her next of kin.

... All I can think of is a piece of old,worn out cloth. How many times can you see it back up before it's just too weak to hold together no matter what you do?

My mother passed away in December last year because her heart was weak as well. I hope for the best for you but it's good that you are bracing yourself now. Hope is good, but I really think it's a good idea to understand what's happening.

Hanging in there but just kinda numb to it. She's been sick and hospitalized for awhile now. She'd actually graduated to a nursing home for about two months before this and was looking better. Goal was to relocate her here at the end of the summer hopefully

I don't know what I'd do if I'd lost any of my parents, sisters, or brother.

I try to prepare myself mentally at the loss of a loved one, but that can only do so much until it really happens, and when it does it hits you like a ton of bricks. My first real encounter with close family loss was my grandfather from my mother's side around November 09', I felt my heart drop to my shoes, and my first reaction was anger...

I wasn't prepared for it since even at his age [late 70's] he was still in extremely great condition, but a malfunction of one of the lifts collapsed while he was doing mechanical work on a bus. Squashed his lungs and heart and died instantly.

At least, for what it's worth, you get to prepare yourself for the worst, though I'd bet that it wouldn't hurt any less. Hope she gets peace in either outcome.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm a big mama's boy and she's pretty much the only family I have at this point. I can't even imagine the pain you are going through.

Be sure that you tell her you love her. It can be tough to lose your mom or anyone you love for that matter, but it's a big relief if you told them you love them instead of regretting that you didn't say it.

Thanks guys. Trying to get some logistics done today, plan out the trip. It'd help if they set a date for her surgery but seems like nothing gets done on the weekend
