The early one-offs were usually based directly on Leonard novels though, which makes them at least better than standard crime dramas by default.
That and most dramas, let alone crime dramas, would kill for a protagonist as cool as Raylan.

The episodes where his anger boils over are some of the best.

First half of season one is episodic because they didn't know if it was going to be picked up long term or not. Once it did, they made the second half of that season more of a serial drama as well as all the other seasons.

Some trivia for you, Timothy Olyphant knew Walton Goggins would be playing a Nazi, but what he didn't know was that Goggins was wearing the swastika tattoos off set so he would get a feel for playing a character people look at with instant disdain. Olyphant had a moment of horror when he went to dinner with him one night and saw the tattoos.

Also, Goggins initially wasn't comfortable playing a Neo Nazi, so Olyphant told him to imagine that Boyd is actually faking it. It adds weight to the scene where Raylan calls Boyd out for exactly this.

I love Boyd. They could have had 60 minute episodes of him just talking and it'd be great. I thought we'd be getting a Justified reunion when I saw Timothy Olyphant was on board in the new Tarantino film, but it looks like Goggins won't be in this one

I really can't think of any other rivalry thing that's similar. "We dug coal together" is what it always comes down to and that's perfect for what they have going on.

That trivia's kinda funny. Not everyone has the balls to do that kind of, uh, character acting. Given that Boyd was on the cover of this season, I figured he wouldn't croak in the first ep, so it'll be interesting seeing their interplay.

When this Hamburger Helper's done, I'll get back to the second episode. Looks like some big band jailbirds are breakin' loose. That drummer kept time pretty well, though.

And then there's Tim, maybe the most perfectly underutilized side character ever.

That's what I like so much about the episodic stuff, it still encourages guest work because it usually comes from crime novels or from Elmore Leonard himself, who worked on something like 40 episodes of the show.

season one almost turned me off, tbh. I'm glad that I gave it a chance, since season two onwards was pretty amazing, IMO.

It's been enjoyable so far. Like I said, procedurals are right up my alley. I forgot this was an FX show instead of a cable one, so I'm okay with it being tamer than Deadwood.

FX is cable. Deadwood is HBO, which is considered a premium channel.

Pretty great show but I lost interest near the end. Goggins and Olyphant had amazing chemistry and basically made the show
