They just don't have the "wow" factor they used to, and this has been true for at least the past 20 years.

Movies like the original Star Wars and Jurassic Park were amazing simply because there was nothing else like them at the time. Now they've been done to death and imitated by countless others.

Similarly, nothing has quite lived up to the jump from 2D gaming to 3D... way back in 1995. Sure, new games are crisper-looking and faster-running, but that's hardly a massive leap forward.

What will it take for both these mediums to capture our hearts and minds as they once did? Well, if I knew that I'd be a billionaire.

Yeah I don't know if it can be fixed. Everyone has access to these fancy graphics so that's all we get now. Make it look good, story ....close 7th place.

I usually only watch older movies and TV shows because everything now is just a shitty remake of the good shit anyway.

Anyways TC, film hasn't stagnated. There's still plenty of original storytelling to be found. Games as a whole have plateaued though for sure

There are still dozens and dozens of great movies coming out every year, so I really don't care if there is a WOW factor or not.

It's crazy how what were once mind-blowing special effects are now yawn-inducing.

Take the Transformers movies for instance, how can such effects-laden action-packed films be so goddamn boring?

Because the rest of the movie isn't good.

good action scenes alone =/= a good action movie

Cause the movies sucked. Effects aren't what made the movies you've referenced earlier groundbreaking. It was the marriage of new effects with great storytelling.

Mainstream films, sure, but there's plenty of hidden gems if you look hard enough. I don't just mean indie shit that's only shown in 5 theaters either, there's plenty of really good wide released films, they just don't get as much buzz from people as the big giant action films, which is our fault as much as Hollywood's. Get Out, Black Swan, and Silver Lining's Playbook are 3 of my favorite films ever, all released in the past decade. Get Out's the only one of those 3 that most people have actually seen, despite both of the others also getting a reasonable amount of buzz at the time of their release.

People have to watch and pay for the more unique movies, or Hollywood wont make them as often. They're never gonna stop being made entirely, but if you want unique ideas, people have to quit financially supporting the rehashes.

I agree, but I think it goes both ways. I think too many people wrote off Black Swan as some kind of chick flick being it's focused around a ballet dancer, but it had some many strange and dark undertones with a thrilling conclusion.

So many people also write off indie video games entirely when there's gems in those as well. How many people actually played games like Headlander, or What Remains of Edith Finch? Both were 10/10 titles for me, and hardly anyone knows what they even are and more haven't played them. It's like anything, if you want results, you need to work for it. There is stuff out there still worth investing time into.

That, and there is an entire generation that grew up on MineCraft and Fortnite is basically Mine-Craft like gaming + Battle Royale Shooter mechanics

People need to be willing to go outside their comfort zone more in media. Most people's only exposure to what new movies are coming out are the trailers they see while watching another big name mainstream movie, so of course the trailers they see for the most part are going to be more big name mainstream movies, usually by the same company.

Also, people writing off entire genres is a problem too. "Oh, I don't like horror movies, they're all the same", "Nah, that's a chick flick", "I don't really like super serious dramas". There's such diversity of film in those genres with some amazing gems that you could find with just 10 minutes of googling, but people just wont do.

It's so easy to find innovative and different films thanks to the internet, both old ones and ones releasing, but people wont take the couple of minutes it takes to even look up upcoming releases for the year and read a couple film descriptions to see if a movie they've never heard the name of might be worth a watch.

It's all about what makes money, these days. Producers aren't willing to take risks like they used to and create original brands or products anymore, and when they do, they get outshined by long-lasting franchises and sequels.

Video games are now like movies in that we just keep seeing the same cycle of sequels for games that were once good just churned out over and over again because it's an easy profit. And anything that's really good, yet original, get drowned out.

It's just the world we live in now. Some games used to really WOW me back in the PS1-PS2 transition. Same with movies back in the 80's and 90's. Now, everything is just "oh hey this is a franchise, lets burn it into the ground and create tons of sequels!"

Okay but "becoming stagnant" is only a symptom, not an underlying problem. The real problem is no one wants to take chances. Companies only want to do what guarantees they make their investment back and reap a huge profit. See: Universal's "Dark Universe"

If that was the only way things had been run for the last 70 years, every property you know and love would never have been.

I think they have the previews on auto volume, a good reason to come late to see a movie or bring earplugs and play on a handheld. 100% of preview trailer's volume should be turned down. I'm not deaf. The World Cup has been great so far, except that jerk from brazil.
