If you don't like the Sopranos, then there are lots of other modern day gangster movies and TV shows. You need to have explicit permission from real people before you can use their likeness in a movie or TV show. The Mafia is certainly not going to give their permission for such uses in movies and TV. The best you can hope for is a few real individuals who have given their permission to be in a movie, such as Donnie Brasco, Henry Hill, etc. I'm not sure how older real people like Al Capone work. I guess they might fall in public domain and so you wouldn't need their permission? I'm not sure.
