I bought one of those flexible metal phone chargers and it served me faithfully for a good 3 or 4 months. Over time though the wiring flayed and now it will only charge if the cord is facing a certain direction. I paid 20 bucks for this it shouldn't break after only 3 months?!

There's not really a difference between the cheap cables and the expensive ones aside from appearance. The only thing that really matters is the charger base, which in most cases is just a 5v 1-2A adapter with a USB port. As long as that's a close match to your device's power needs then you can use any cheap USB cable with it. In practice even if the charger base is a little under-powered it will still usually charge your device just fine.
