Right now I'm reading through the German Idealism canon, but also am reading a second book on the side just to keep things different. Right now my secondary book is A Theory of Justice by Rawls; I'm not super into political philosophy but it's for a reading group. Should be finished by the end of the month.

I'll read anything presuming I haven't read it yet, and I guess other kinds of theory-based books are fine too.

anti-christ is the quick-read version to understand his idea of the will to power

it's a pretty useful thing to help grasp the rise of 20th century fascism

I cannot stand John Rawls' Theory of Justice. Not only is the book enormously dry and boring to read, but the ideas are absolutely awful.

TC, have you considered reading Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America? Harvard's professor Harvey Mansfield remarked with justification that it was at once the best work about democracy and the best work about America. It is my favorite work of political philosophy and feels enormously relevant to our own lives because of his constant emphasis on the real, lived experience of democratic people. He offers the antidote to both the radically individualistic conception of government espoused by philosophers such as John Locke and Thomas Hobbes as well as the hyper-collectivist political pantheism of G.W.F. Hegel and Spinoza.

Depressing to see people recommending Spinoza and Nietzsche, who are mostly interesting due to the things that they got wrong and not because their philosophy is really worthwhile in and of itself. Nietzsche in particular, due to his radical reorientation of the entire tradition and discipline of philosophy, is most interesting when compared to thinkers who completely opposed him, such as Plato and Augustine.

If you want a humane and workable political philosophy work, Nietzsche and Spinoza are basically the last people whom you should read IMO.

Why, to both the first sentence and last sentence you typed out. From what I understand of Spinoza, his political views just culminate in free speech for everyone, which I actually don't necessarily categorically agree with. I don't like Nietzsche on principle either. People don't have the capacity to make their own value systems consistently, and unless he brings some other ideas to the table I don't know what he would add to a political conversation. Maybe I am missing something with both of these thinkers.

Do you just not like contract theory?

Kant is great, and also compliments Rawls-- he's (Kant) in my primary readings.

An "I can't believe they said that" is a great idea, esp if CE picks controversial books/writers

If I did regular book report topics would you guys want on going commentary or an end of book review?
