I might just skip the MA entirely depending on things

I have a few schools in mind but nothing concrete. my grad studies will either be in philosophy or communications/semiotics/media studies.

You should figure out what you actually want to go to grad school for and then look based on good programs in that area.

Grad school isn't like undergrad. There's no real notion of "This is a school that's good for grad school no matter which program you pick" like you see there.

I know exactly what I want to study. It's not so obscure that I need to go to a specific school or study under a specific prof

re: an MA in Communications, I already have two schools picked out. If I do my PhD in this field I will probably go to EGS depending on scholarships and grants.

Philosophy MA/PhD is basically the only one where I have a lot of options. But I have to go somewhere fancy to be employable.

The American system is so weird

I can't imagine going from a BSc direct to a PhD

See, where I am

You do your bachelor's

Then your master's

Only then do you start considering a PhD

My friend is one of the last ones in Sweden who were allowed to do that. It worked out fine but obviously there's a steeper threshold in the beginning.

communications is a 'normie' degree because it has its own 'job' pool (communications directors, coordinators, etc). people like majoring in things that have jobs titled after it. also i guess some comn programs teach you oration and non-verbal skills.

the other side of communication, though, is more theoretical and academic.

i guess it's popular because it has both sides of what people do a degree for.

i'm starting my second BA (i have transfer credits so it will only take 1.5-2 years), which i am going to treat like a masters degree anyway.

This is very dependent on discipline too, tbh.

Like most mathematicians get accepted into a PhD program and along the way they get a masters, all happening at the same university and essentially right out of undergrad.

Whereas even in America, some graduate programs like music rarely have that, with most people who get their PhD in e.g. music get their master's somewhere else and it's often many years past their undergrad.

I don't know how the courses are over in Canada, but here it doesn't really matter if you treat a bachelor like a master. The courses are way different, the thesis is typically bigger (for two year masters, which is practically the only thing anyone does) and it's just altogether different. Maybe you'll have the opportunity to be more flexible.

From what I hear, bachelor degrees in the US don't even include theses

sorry for steering your topic off-course TC
