I'd advise watching one of the Netflix shows or Inhumans though. It'll be easier if you know there's some good stuff coming. If you're like most people, Inhumans and S1 of LC and IF and Defenders might be a slog to get through. If you're really planning on watching all of the MCU, I'd advise you to get through Inhumans or LC now.

Yeah just watch the films and AoS imo. The netflix shows are barely connected to the MCU and are mostly of questionable quality.

There used to be a time where I thought Netflix shows were a level above AoS. Then season 4 and Iron Fist happened.

Ant-Man

This movie was originally helmed by Edgar Wright. Like, originally slated to be a Phase 1 movie to come out alongside Iron Man and Hulk. It got put on the docket because the script wasn't family friendly enough. But then, eventually it was revived! I was so incredibly excited for it, as the man is famous for Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, and awkward sexts to my sister. However, there were creative disagreements and he left the project, meaning this movie won't be as good as I hoped.

It's an old Triskelion! And a young Hank Pym! And an old Howard Stark! And an OLD PEG CARTER! How many movies is she even in?

What is Paul Rudd doing in prison? I thought he was an actor. Required viewing for all Ant-Man fans:

Paul Rudd has a Masters in Electrical Engineering? What is he doing at Baskin Robbins, he doesn't need a minimum wage job, he's a famous actor!

Why is Pym so old? "Tales to Astonish" pretty overt, there.

Yellow-Jacket is a pretty cool name.

Oh jeez, the bad guy just compressed a dude into a small pile of goop. Why make a tiny soldier when you can just make a shrink ray that turns people into goop? Shrink the vehicle someone is in and presto, bam.

The humor so far is... it really feels like it was almost an Edgar Wright movie but somebody else took over.

This whole heist is clearly staged for Pym to lure Paul Rudd in. And probably test him as well.

Ok, this humor is starting to grate on me. It's almost funny, but mostly just short of it.

oh no... not a lamb... poor lamb. This villain is freaking evil and probably the worst person in the history of Marvel films.

Why did Paul Rudd shrink... and start running around instead of trying to increase back in size? This whole sequence with him running around while shrunk is silly. I guess they're just taking advantage of their opportunity to do a Honey I Shrunk the Kids sequence, but man is it silly.

Janet WAS the Wasp. I kinda like that they skipped over the whole Hank and Janet Pym story and all the abuse and everything. Hope seems like she'll be the female lead of an Ant-Man sequel.

Ant-Man vs Falcon is the best part of this movie so far.

I guess I never expected to see a movie where a tiny man rode a surfboard made out of fire ants through a water pipe.

Everything with the cops being there is annoying. Adds complication, solves it in 5 seconds, repeat, repeat, repeat...

So the combat in the Ant-Man suit is a little unnecessary. If he has the same strength, or more while small, why does he ever get big, aside from to travel greater distances?

Wow, they actually made me feel sympathetic for an ant dying. Good job.

FINALLY he puts the Yellow Jacket suit on. Ok, this climax is pretty great. I love the switches between regular size and tiny in this instance. Since both combatants are able to switch sizes, it makes the changes all the more fun and less worth thinking about. It is a little interesting how Paul Rudd just jumps around the place and looks like he's flying, but he's just jumpin around. Why does he have wings installed in his suit? Why did the Wasp have wings but not the Ant? Seems like an oversight, there.

All of the stuff they're throwing around while small being shown to just be a toy flying around the room at normal size is pretty hilarious.

Hahaha he flew by a tardigrade. Man, this movie is an acid trip. Like I said, the subatomic shrinking was a Chekhov's gun.

Stan Lee as bartender in Luis's story. I was wondering when they'd bring him in. Really effective. Stan Lee always works the best when he has a quick appearance in a non-speaking role.

Aaaaand it looks like the AVENGERS are looking for Paul Rudd. Will he make a showing in Avengers, 2.5 Civil War? Perhaps he will!

"The Accords"? That sure sounds like something that won't be important at all to the plot of the next Avengers movie.

Alright, so... the movie was a little rough to start. It felt pretty clear throughout that it was a film where the directing didn't always match with the writing. But it wasn't done that poorly. Most of the bad moments were paced out far enough with good inbetween, so it didn't ruin the movie like Iron Man 2's bad moments did.

It was an interesting take on Pym, but once again, better than having abusive jerkface Pym. I kinda like old, badfather Pym. Hope was solid too... like most things with this movie, the first act really didn't sell me on her, but as things got developed, her character was shown to be well-written and pretty badass. Way better than Iron Man 2's Black Widow.

Darren Cross aka Yellowjacket... was kinda boring. He wasn't bad. The guy was a jerk. Seemed to fittingly be a Hank Pym that DID become an asshole. Seems a little dumb that they said the whole "particles mess with brain chemistry" as a way to explain him turning evil. Why not just have him be evil? He was obsessed with proving himself to be better than Pym... just elaborate on that goal and obsession and show how it forces him to sacrifice his own humanity. I mean, he just flat out killed a guy in the beginning. He was clearly an ass. Particles my ass.

Paul Rudd, as himself, was a pretty good character too. I mean, thief with a heart of gold is a tiring trope, but it's easy to ignore that and just focus on him being himself. My suspension of disbelief was ruined, however, by them featuring Paul Rudd as a featured character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What are they going to do next, have John McCain get to be the Rhino in the next Spiderman movie?

Get it? Because RINO?

Anyway, I enjoyed this movie more than I expected to. It was rough, but at its core it had a lot of great elements. Even if the story and writing wasn't the best, the spectacle of effects, exploring the small world, ants, etc... were all very worth seeing.

I liked Ant-Man even more because it's so self-contained.

There's no real "THE WORLD IS IN DANGER" stakes in the movie. The implications may be there, but it never reaches those stakes. It's basically just a guy trying to redeem himself and in the end save his family. And he basically cleans up the problem himself. There's no huge collateral damage, or any "The Avengers need called in" scenes. "Ant-Man" doesn't really mean anything to the Avengers, and were it not for the run-in with Falcon, you'd have reason to believe they'd continue not knowing the guy even exists for awhile.

Luis is very loved, AND his scenes are one of the legacy items that REMAIN from Wright. It's very his style.

Overall I like the humour in this too.

I completely agree with Darren Cross. There's something to him with his relationship to Pym. He has this cast off apprentice feel to him where he wants to surpass Pym but even more desperately he wants Pym's approval. It was good enough motivation for a sociopath to become a supervillain.

But... why do that brain chemistry stuff? It just makes his motivation pointless... A somewhat decently done villain that's just made worse for no reason.

I think I liked Luis more in the second film than in the first.

Then again I liked the comedy in AM2 more than the actual plot or action.

AM1 is pretty good. It's not amazing compared to some of MCU's best, but it's better than 80% of pre-MCU stuff at least. It's a testament to the quality MCU films have reached. They can grab a C-list hero and produce a hidden gem like this.

And it only gets better from that.

Uh... not sure where that came from, but to answer it depends on what you count as a JRPG. I don't think there's any full-blown turn-based Final Fantasy style games, but maybe Ikachan counts?

I guess they just really want to keep the "will they won't they" thing going on with Fitz and Simmons. My expectation is that he got killed by the monster, and it took his form. My hope is that we'll learn that Simmons was just crazy and made up the guy entirely.
