Department stores only have basic stuff like Monopoly, Operation, and a bunch of generic stuff. Where do people get the better ones from? Exclusively the internet?

Smaller chains will have new and interesting board games. That said, I've found some of the big new ones in Target.

But really, the Internet is the best place to grab up new startups.

Hey @CyricZ I'm thinking of buying a board game from Amazon but I've been burned doing this before. It was a DVD i bought that the seller described as new but was obviously used and hastily wrapped in plastic. If this were to happen to me with this board game, it would be even worse because there's not even a guarantee all the pieces are there. That's not even to mention they sold it to me in a quality that's worse than they described.

That said, is there anything I can do to make sure the seller I'm buying from is giving me exactly what I'm paying for?

If possible only go for stuff that is sold by Amazon. At least if you get ripped off you can always get your money back with no cost to you.

Duly noted. The only thing that makes me a little nervous about all this is most third-party sellers have 98 or 99% feedback but the negative feedback on their history has to do exactly with what we're talking about. So it could be some people occasionally get unlucky and get an opened product, whether the seller knew about it or not. Or the other 99% just don't care one way or the other about what condition they receive stuff in.

The world's largest store dedicated to board games is in Portland and I'd go there if I wanted anything, then check online if they don't have it and can't order it for me.

Oh and a few crowd funding games do look good and I'd consider getting behind some if I had a group to play with with any regularity. :/

There's a few gaming stores in my area that are dedicated to CCGs and Board Games. That is usually where I buy mine.

Google and see if your city or the closest large city has a comicbook store. Chances are, they double as a board game store.
