They all look super sterile/artificially gritty and use the same stupid Tim Burton ass art styles

Creative cinematography and directorial work is completely non existant

What I hate is jump scares, they get me almost everytime but damn I want some horror in my horror films. For example, John Carpenter's The Thing was pure horror in the fact that the creature looked fucked up and the thought of not knowing who the Thing was is incredible. Another example is Heavy Metals B-17 scene with the zombie crew.

Good horror movies have been making a bit of a comeback lately. Hereditary, IT, A Quiet Place, Get Out, The Babadook.

The issue is, for everyone of those movies, there's, like, three shit horror movies.

It is like emblamatic of the not like the other girls-ifying of modern horror. The others, while good-great in various respects, all still share that overly sterile/artificial look. Movies just look horrible now in general, and that is readily apparent in horror films where the look is so often vital to the effectiveness of the film.

The Thing is like the perfect example of how to instill paranoia and claustrophobia/isolation/helplessness in the viewer. Night of the Living Dead and (obviously) The Shining as well.

What do you consider a good horror movie? Rosemary's Baby? Lol.

Horror is probably my favourite genre, but I never go in expecting cinematic masterpiece that's going to leave an impression on me years later or some shit. Older movies feel dated and incredibly cheesy, newer ones leave a lot to be desired and are very "cookie cutter" in style and formula.

I dunno. I always considered horror the "so bad it's good" genre. I only care that the movie is entertaining.

a good horror movie needs some suspense and thriller to it, and the main villain needs to be more complicated than just "I want to kill people, preferably high schoolers!". but its so much easier to just go the blood and guts route so thats what we get.

thats what made the first saw movie so great....it had blood and guts, a good plot, and suspense.

there is a place for both, but it is 10x easier just to make a mass murdering villain and have him go ape shit and call it a day.

If you're watching horror movies expecting them to be good then lol.

You might like Creep, though. Those were a couple of suspenseful trips and I don't even like found footage movies.

There's been a resurgence of great horror movies lately. But the horror genre was always plagued by having a Million bad movies for the handful of good movies since forever. Blame how easy and cheap it is to make a horror film.

The fuck are you talking about? Hereditary was fantastic, as was A Quiet Place, It Comes at Night, the Witch, and to a lesser extent It Follows.

If you watch some typical haunted house shit, then yeah it's probably not going to be great, but the same can be said about any genre's generic cash grab movies.

For me the scariest horror movie was The Ring. I watched it two summers ago and couldn't sleep for a week afterwards.

The Ring fucked me up for I swear like two months, like sleeping with the lights on level, and to this day I still have a nightmare every year or two about it.

Which is funny, because Ive watched it several times since and, while scary, the actual movie doesnt have the effect on me that the lasting psychological impression it initially left on me would indicate. I enjoy it a lot. It was just 13-year-old Biscuits first legit scary movie and it imprinted on my brain; nothing ever scared me half that much again.

EDIT: Well, P.T. got close. Different medium, though. I still expect to see Lisa in dark rooms sometimes.

some (not all) modern horror movies aren't as good as the classic oldies such as the toxic avenger and dawn of the dead (original).

P.T. imo is the scariest "game" out there just because of the environment and sound used. I was playing the demo one night at the last part where the clock gos off at midnight and a transformer near my apartment complex blew a fuse making the power go out. Fuck that, I went outside till the power came back on.

Hereditary kind of mind fucked me. Its not so much that its scary, but that its creepy and its scenes linger and had me wondering about a lot of what was going on. Its a messed up, brutal story. All the other horror movies lately, including Conjuring and such, were OK, but I laughed through some of them and did not really fear for the protagonists safety.

I loved Creep. I even liked Creep 2, though it wasn't as good. :v Hopefully there is a Creep 3. I just find that nutso so endearing for some reason.

Oh, easily. Her ragged breathing/crying and the jittering silhouette was just tooooo much. It was also just such a mindfuck at times too, with stuff like the fridge dripping blood suspended from the ceiling. Lots of what am I looking at and why is it so upsetting moments.

Also, being a first person experience where your only button is to LOOK CLOSER at things was so deviously evil.

I think they are making a Creep 3.
2 was a little more ... hamfisted? Is that the right term? But regardless they explored a different part of the psychology while retaining the same premise which I was impressed with.

Mark Duplass kinda went off the deep end after The League lol.

The Witch and Hereditary were not only great horror movies, but some of the best movies of their year. Hereditary sits at #1 for me right now out of 30+. A Quiet Place is at #4

I didn't live It Follows or The Babadook, but a lot of people did. Still need to watch It Comes at Night
