To be honest, if a random kid is cutting my grass without my permission, I would question what he's doing. If he doesn't stop, or seems like he doesn't belong (e.g. a young 12 year old boy by himself with a lawnmower his size without any safety gear?), what else can I do except call 911?

Your concerns are legit

But calling 911 on a 12 yo?

I'm not one of these "white people need to stop calling the cops" idiots but . . . I just don't see why 911 would be necessary.

Also, was it 911 or the sheriffs office? These are very different things. (Not that you'd need to call the police for this.)

edit: Also, (warning:full paranoia alert) did they actually confirm the police were called? I didn't see them interview any. This could be a charade to drum up business and support.

Eh. Risky enough. They're calling people with guns. A few parents have made that mistake on their mentally ill children and gotten them killed.

instead of calling the cops, have a chat with the kid.
just ask them to cut the "right area" of grass not the grass that doesn't need to be cut.

sure would save some embarrassing situations where it spirals out of control.

You could talk to him and tell him to fuck off. :\

That said, yeah, there's no way I'm letting some 12y/o operate equipment on my property. He gets hurt, I somehow get sued even if I didn't authorize it.

Seems like he was accidentally on the wrong side of the yard or something. But I'd be concerned about a scam or something. Mow the lawn then expect/demand payment. It is sketchy behavior but depending on the setup, a perfectly reasonable mistake. Simply talking to the child seems like the easiest solution.

The news report is very biased. If it truly happened the way it was presented, then it is absolutely overkill. If there was some escalation (e.g. homeowner told the kid to stop but the kid didn't), it's acceptable to call 911.

Now I do believe this is just one of those frivolous bullshit 911 calls.

Adults do, and they take on that risk (like losing your toes). But a 12 year old kid? Come on... Give him some safety goggles and ear protection.

I mowed the grass as a kid without goggles or safety gear. In fact, I lived in one of those times where everyone starts talking about how nowadays "kids are pussies, not like us where we didn't need no helmets" and look where we're at? Look at this country and how great it is.

Why you making me feel old?..../holds back tears.

but that's my point. People talking about how kids these days, kids those days, and how 80s and 90s were better because we didn't 'need' whatever but safety gear was probably one of them. "I got my ass whooped when I was a kid and I turned out fine" which is usually said by someone who is definitely not fine >_>...like...I've met them and could tell they were probably abused and it definitely affected them negatively in their lives.

Now imagine if this kid got hurt mowing the lawn on your property. He could get a lawyer to try and make you liable for the damages. By calling the cops, you are making it know that he has no permission to cut your law and is trespassing. So that may work in your favor. Plus where is this kids parents? My dad would have never let me take the mower out and now strangers lawns for free.

This is our new world. Back in my day, if the next door neighbor went over the bounds of the lawn, I'd walk outside and ask what he's doing because he's twelve and not doing anything suspicious.

Lol, approaching kids means you'll automatically be a pedo.

Look out everyone, I'm going to be arrested at work when I approach a table with sweets. They think I'm going to toss their kid into a white van outside and am going to finger blast their son.

Seriously. This fear that you're going to be seen as a racist for APPROACHING your neighbor to question them. God, Buddha, whichever one of you exists, come down here please.

I can't help but think if more kids wore helmets in the 80's/90's, Trump wouldn't be President.
Also, isn't it against the law to call 911 for a non emergency?

Haven't read topic really but heard this story.

Kid mowed a tiny patch of grass that was part of the neighbor's lawn. The kid seems like a nice little boy and the neighbor is a notorious cop caller of the neighborhood kids apparently. They said he called 911 in the winter because of a snowball fight etc.

I'm gonna say it's nothing to do with race and more to do with a mean old man in the neighborhood with control issues.

I can sorta see the annoyance if the kid cuts a little of the side which is known to happen when cutting grass. You end up cutting your neighbor's a little so it looks uneven and you have to even it out..

but I think if you cut your grass regularly, this shouldn't be an issue.

Lol, I'm the one that brought race into this.

People are defending it because it's like 35% of the story. There was never any word on what was said to the cops, or what happened, or anything. There's people who have a whole what if scenario and are getting angry and there's people saying in some occasions that could be a decent move to call the po. And the people on that side are saying it would be bullshit, rightfully so, if it was all because of race or what have you.

I don't know, I delivered pizzas for a few years and the amount of do not step in my lawn signs I saw in people's yards was kinda surprising. Never know.
