Literally the only member of the 500/500 club, hell he's the only member of the 400/400 club. And to make it easy for y'all, 500+ home runs and 500+ stolen bases which is an insane stat.

Or the year he reached base more times than he had at bats.

He's the greatest.

Bonds is what happened when the best player to ever play baseball decided to take steroids and be even better. Fans of athleticism or sport should be thankful they were able to watch him.

That walking asterisk? He could have had a shot at greatness without the steroids but he took the easy way and ended up ruining his entire life's work and legacy.

He faced plenty of pitchers that were on steroids too. The way I see it, the steroid era was an even playing field because they were so rampant and unchecked across the league that it was safer to assume that a power hitter or pitcher was on them rather than wasn't. And in that mostly even playing field, Bonds dominated the league like no other hitter ever did in any other era in baseball history. He was a physical freak of nature, but he also had a picture-perfect swing technique and an incredible batter's eye, neither of which are helped by steroids. That's what set him apart from McGwire, Sosa, Palmeiro, and the other steroid guys of the same era.

I will say though... if Ken Griffey Jr. had managed to avoid the injury bug and stayed mostly healthy, or if he had also used steroids like the others to help him stay healthy and hit more homers, I'm fully convinced that he would have put up stats just as great as Bonds, maybe even better. He's the only thing that makes me hesitate about saying that Bonds is 100% definitively the greatest. But that's a "what if" that we'll sadly never get the answer to.

I agree with you on Griffey Jr. To me he's the true star of that whole era just for being as good as he was without steroids.

I loved Bonds back when he was a Pirate before his head grew 3 times its size. Mike Trout is a great all around player that flys under the radar playing for the Angels.
