Trump is going to appoint a religious extremist to the supreme court who will be there for 40+ years. This appointee will become the new swing vote.

I don't care about political affiliation, but I want a supreme court justice who supports logic and rationality. Trump will never appoint such a person. Neil Gorsuch was a religious extremist with horrifically archaic views on non-political issues such as assisted suicide for the terminally ill. The difference here is that that Kennedy is the swing vote, and his replacement will have immense power.

Kenned leaned conservative, but he was intelligent and rational and believed in separation of church and state. I guarantee you his replacement will be the opposite. Today is a sad day for the country.

His leading pick is supposedly Hardiman. I think that's actually a good pick. He's not another Gorsuch.

Though, Trump being Trump, I wouldn't be surprised if he puts Pryor in there. Now THAT would be shit.

It is really stupid that we have even gotten to this point. Whether or not you agree with him politically, Obama's supreme court nominee was stolen from him. It was 100% his constitutional right to appoint a judge, but Mitch McConnell delayed the vote using technicalities. That kind of crap is not how our government is supposed to work.

No one Trump appoints is ever going to be a swing vote.

The title of swing vote now falls to Roberts, and he swings far less than even Kennedy did (which wasn't very much to begin with).

Roberts will become irrelevant as there will be a hardline conservative majority. I hope you like creationism being taught in public schools, because that is the kind of crap this country is going to see for the next 40 years.

Judges shouldn't be ruling based on either of those. They should be ruling based on what the law says, evidence presented, and past rulings.
