I haven't seen or spoke to him in years but this is still very shocking. He apparently been struggling with this feeling for a long time. I regret not catching up with him over the years.

I am in the same position. Back when the internet was a fairly new thing but there was no myspace, facebook etc. Tried to get a hold of an old military brat friend of mine and came to find he ended it. Easier said than done, but don't dwell too much on it.

It is sad when people fell like they had no other way. And don't blame yourself. You didn't know and couldn't have known that he was feeling that way. Even if you had talked on the phone, you may not have been able to tell. I know you said you hadn't seen or talked to him in a while, but I'm sorry for your lost. It's tough to lose someone close to you, even if you hadn't been in touch lately...
