Seriously, in some ways, this was a great film, with HAL-9000, and the sense of mystery, and clearly the visual effects and set design were very advanced for the time, and still stand up well. But do we really need a roughly 2 and a half hour film, that is incredibly slow, and then doesn't really reveal anything much at the end?

Youre analyzing a movie made in 1968 by an innovative and iconic film maker with the lens of someone whos experienced the culmination of how he and this movie influenced the medium. Now imagine seeing it in 68, a year before we actually landed on the moon, and a time when its sci fi concepts were still novel

It's a marvel of cinematography. The most memorable scene for me is when he detaches into space. Extremely long shots where the intensity is established through his breathing getting faster.
