There are 7 or 8 self-checkout lanes. During the late- evenings and mornings, only *3* of them are open.

What kind of stupid backwards bullshit is that?

It just causes line backups. At 10:30 at night.

Oh and you'll never see more than 4 of 20+ lanes ever open at one time.

The reason it's like that at night, I assume, is so that they can actually be monitored to make sure you aren't stealing stuff at them. I agree otherwise with the fact that they normally have a million registers and nobody manning them though

It's not about stealing, half the time they aren't even watching you and the other half they can't tell from their station you're scanning expensive fruit at banana prices, it's there because the machines and its customers are stupid and require manual assistance all the time

This. I used to work at Walmart. The self checks aren't used enough at nighttime to warrant paying someone to supervise them
