This is the difference in scripts between GTA 3 and 4.

Its also would be easy to imagine any Nintendo game would easily be the script on the left. If that. Its hilarious youre sitting here trying to argue in favour of the pamphlet.

Nintendo makes fun games sure. A lot of companies do. All the ones mentione so far. They also take the time to write amazing scripts. Hire quality actors. Spend how much time and money doing motion capture, etc. Just think of how far motion capture itself has progressed as a technique and how much of that was pioneered by these video game companies. Nintendo gives Mario a hat to throw though...theyre doing their best okay?

Nintendo has had forever to catch up. They take their formulas, add a couple things to them for next years release and fanboys literally lose their minds and praise them as a second coming.

They could be spending all this money they print developing better games in every respect, compared to these previously mentioned. Its not the same playing field and this isnt a fair fight. This is Lebron James vs a 5th grader.

Honestly this topic makes me realize how stupid some people are.

I absolutely can't stand Last of Us(or any Naughty Dog game for that matter)

I enjoy the Witcher franchise for what its worth even though 3 is the only one I can replay and tolerate.

I find a lot of Nintendo games mediocre at best, though stuff like the first two Xenoblade games and Wonderful 101 are fantastic games.

And for what its worth I find GTA to be one of the most boring franchises I ever played, I enjoy Saints Row far more and I find that game to be shit tier as well.

While I can see the issue, I highly enjoy the gameplay itself. The story and characters are amazing and the gameplay can be slightly difficult to muster at first. I remember getting tossed around at the start but learning an enemy's attack pattern was nice and I am fond of the crafting system directed towards alchemy specifically because it gives the options of boosting your character for fights.

Then again, the Witcher role itself is something I value. The class itself is neat and refreshing against your normal classes like warrior or simply mage.

The game can be slightly glitchy, yeah but its definitely a very nice game but one game can't raise a company to the highest standard.

Do I think nintendo is a top tier? Yes. The games are fun and there are plenty. You could dive down to the late 1980s and find something great by them tbh.

Imagine thinking script size and actor quality makes a game good.

We live in a world where people are putting on games on this calibre. Where developers are pushing the absolute limits of what video games are as a medium.How far they go to fuse gameplay and story. How deep they go into their characters and world. How much time they spend crafting these experiences over the course of dozens of hours. The amount of sheer effort it takes to create something this ambitious.

This isn't an argument over your personal enjoyment of something, that's not a metric worth any merit in this discussion. Shit, I mean I had fun with that racing game that I got with a Burger King meal, but the shit ain't no Forza.

And no sillies, this isn't saying every game needs this level of production.

Just like another poster said. No company personifies the phrase "resting on your laurels" than Nintendo. They have never shown they're capable of anything close to this. There's industry standards all around us and Nintendo is happy sitting in the middle, and nobody pushes them to be better. And hey, that's fine, if they're making fun games who cares? I agree. Just as long as you realize that creatively, they have no place at the Big Boy table.

Designing interesting and fun gameplay mechanics is apparently a lot harder than making realistic graphics with an interesting story. The former just doesn't have the visual aspect to hold up as proof of any sort of accomplishment, and since it's more in the feel of the mechanics it's not as easily described or discussed as the story.

1) Designing a game that is "fun" is by no means challenging and if you want proof of that just go look at the app store. Your grandma has a game on there she made herself, it's that fucking easy.

2) You do realize that every game has to be fun in order for someone to get enjoyment out of it. Why would anyone play it otherwise?

3) Now that we understand fun is a fundamental part of video games. Just try, seriously, take a massive step back and just try to imagine how difficult to design a game that is not only is enjoyable to play on a rudimentary level. You then have the monumental task of building a fully fleshed AAA game by 2018 standards around it.

Pretty fucking daunting. I don't blame Nintendo for not giving it a go. Easier to play it safe.
