I don't know, I like this. Rated higher than Citizen Kane according no Rotten Tomatoes and now it could be nominated for an Oscar? The more they aggrandize the quality of this movie the funnier it gets.

You're just now worrying about the oscars being a patronizing hollywood circlejerk?

Black Panther deserves all its success. At absolute worst, it's a competently made mainstream movie that's broken new ground for the film industry.

I know naysayers like to say Blade was the original mainstream superhero movie with a black lead, but Black Panther is the first one with a mostly black cast and creative team with a budget of its size, and the first one to actually be unapologetically black with its themes and narrative .

There's going to be people that insist "hurr durr this movie only did well because black people" but it really was important that this movie be a success and I think the movie was good enough to warrant it.

Keep in mind that hardly anybody cares about (in the same capacity) Avatar being such a huge success despite virtually everything about that movie being average besides its special effects.

but it's been able to deliver a sense of pride within black people, especially africans, and the whole cultural impact has been much larger than the film itself

it'd be nice if it was nominated but i'm on the fence tbh. being honest, BP broke new ground in its positive portrayal of african nations and gave a resurgence of black pride

Of the movies I've seen so far, nothing really seems like it'll be up for the big reward. Love, Simon isn't artsy enough and Hereditary or A Quiet Place could possibly get love like Get Out last year, but it's not likely

9/10 movies nominated for BP i give a 4/5 to or higher. some are pretentious trash, yeah, like that one with Denzel from a year or two ago, but i almost always like them.

If you really want equality its really important not to blow truly meaningless events out of proportion

Nobody will take it seriously down the line if its merely praised by virtue

Its like pandering to a child for coloring inside the lines. Its not hard, its not special, don't give dramatically false praise. A "wow that was really good, very thematically consistent, yada yada" is literally all thats warranted for ANY film thats not a documentary or biopic

But nobody can deny its getting an inordinant amount of praise for the sole quality of being so heavily drenched in African culture

There's been a better Superhero movie... Infinity War. And if people are going by RT score, Paddington 2 is blasting the competition. Yes, it was a good movie, but not even close to the best of the year.

it "getting an inordinate amount of praise" and that praise being "blown out of proportion" is your opinion, and that's fine, but others might see it as well deserved.

you can't really fault people for how they feel about it. like, for example, one of the Lord of the Rings won best picture, and I think that they're alright movies, but I feel the same way about them that you might about Black Panther, but it is what it is
