Absolute 10/10. Has some of my favorite game series of all time such as The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and the D&D infinity engine games.

Great genre that's heavily overrated. They put a lot of focus on pretty mundane things, with generally useless stats, terrible combat systems that gets even worse with most of them playing out as use bigger spells and hack and slash til they die, few ways to feel like you're outplaying the game outside doing janky grindings like taking a bunch of bs and building a bunch of useless items. But they also put more effort in diverging story paths, which can also be hit or miss because many times story can just lose focus or feel episodic rather than a grand big adventure, and the writing style is more familiar to the western audiences.

I think if the genre as a whole got away from the shackles of their DnD and similar tabletop RPG origins, it could be something more fun to play. Also maybe a little less reliance on the first person action gameplay

I get why some people really love them and there are definitely parts I appreciate but overall I feel like one of the defining points of the genre is a certain level of freedom that I don't really feel is necessary or even good in video games like that. And I don't find it to be an interesting type of freedom either
