As someone who remembers what our reputation to the rest of the world was like (for the most part at least) before 9/11 it's depressing to think about. But at this point the world is changing so fast and the Internet is amalgamating all same-language countries into single cultures I don't think it will really matter for that much longer.

I mean yeah we suck, but we still put out the best shit there is and y'all watch, listen, play, use it. I feel like just the sheer amount of good things the US produces has to make up for a lot. Like yeah a lot of the country is jingoistic, but did you see Infinity War? Hell you couldn't make the Wire or Breaking Bad without the country's messed up drug problems and ridiculous health care policies. So...you're welcome.

It's like when you hear there's been a bombing in Afghanistan and you go, well duh that place is a war zone with a ton of religious ideology conflicting.

I imagine that's how the world sees the USA when we report another mass shooting, something that is tragic and makes headline news, but is expected from that part of the world.

It's probably well deserved. This country is full of morons. Unfortunately the wrong people get blamed for it. I wouldn't say other countries are much more developed though. Other countries can be just as ignorant in other ways.

I've never thought about the outside world's perception. It's like wasting time thinking about your neighbor's dog's perception of you.

Obama might have been a big nothing and I disagreed with so many of his decisions but his international PR was maybe the best of any head of state I've ever seen. In fact it annoyed me how much people liked the guy to be honest.

I don't put pride in my country. What people do outside of my reach has nothing to do with me. Im just focusing on taking care of and making those close to me happy. Better than being angry at the world and having the negative energy spread to those you love.

I don't know, I'm a little over the sneering genre of "Americans should feel terrible," because many people in this country don't agree with the current and past administrations, and I feel like the "Americans suck" or "ugly American" stereotype erases them. Plus, other countries have embarrassments and faults as well.

there seems to be a response which is either

1. why do i care about what other people/countries think?
2. other countries are worse than america anyway
3. what is the point of having pride in your country

and then a minority of self-aware americans who realise the dumbfuckery of their country

So if you're not self-loathing you're not self-aware? Give me a break bud. Do you think the average Chinese person gives a fuck what people in other counties think about them? What about the average Russian person? Or the average...whoever? The reality is, things like this are not of a concern for most people regardless of what country they are from. Because, well, most people have real problems to worry about. There are obviously exceptions. Some people do care about stuff like that. Maybe there are even some entire countries that care. But Americans are hardly bizarre for thinking like that. It's pretty normal.

You also have to enjoy that 40 some odd posts on this message board is a really good insight to the American psyche. I wouldn't pay him too much attention.
