I am the king of the dollar.

Anyways, as always looking for errors, miscuts, older bills and fancy serial numbers. I looked through a few bills in the first strap so far and already found a star note. This one isnt rare but it was so close to being the rarest star note ive ever found

http://www.mycurrencycollection.com/reference/star-notes/lookup/1/2013/f03671522*

ill keep going on with it later on. i like to take my time going through bills when im at home because i can shoot through hundreds of ones in minutes.

WTF is a star note?

While on the topic, I have a few awkward coins that I don't know about. One is a 1990 silver penny. Got it as change and thought it was a dime at first. The other is a 1952 quarter that doesn't sound right if you drop it on a desk.

Huh. Been meaning to find something about these but don't really know where to start. I mean if I type 'my quarter sounds weird' into a search engine it's not gonna take me to places I wanna go.

A star note is indicated by a star next to the serial number. It means its original bill came out wrong and it is its replacement. You can check how rare it is by going to that site above. If mine was from a print run of 150 or 100k 50-100 bucks resale wouldnt be out of the question. As is a print run of 3.2 million...doesnt matter. Worth a dollar.

Without seeing the penny it could be the thin copper layer wore off or was scratched off because under the copper is silver colored zinc.

The quarter is 90% silver worth about 3 bucks. Keep it as a silver investment. You can find silver in circulated change in the following denoms: quarters and dimes...1964 and prior. Nickels 1943-45, and half dollars until 1970.

I can probably get a pic. The penny looks very clean so I don't think anything was scratched off.

I'm going to have to look at my dollars now. Can't say I've noticed a star before. Who knows what I could have laying around. I don't carry pennies as change so I have multiple cans/banks full. Several years ago I built myself a MAME machine with a working coin slot so that became a bank for quarters. The bin is almost full, it's like lifting a car battery.

K, tried. I'm pretty sure my camera has a macro setting but I can't find it so this will have to do.

It's not a dime misprint but it doesn't look right to me. On the copper penny there's a bit of a gap between the edge and the text at the top. There's little to none on the silver one. Oh shit I forgot pics of the back...

here is a small guide to fancy serial numbers. thats not all to look for but thats the most basic:

http://www.coolserialnumbers.com/FancySerialNumbers.aspx

I...dont know what that penny is. The only silver penny made is the 1943 steel wheat cent, because copper was needed for WWII. Those arent super rare or valuable unless in fantastic condition but they are neat.

as for your penny I have no idea man. I'd post about it on a dedicated coin forum such as https://www.cointalk.com/forums/

though ive never been there i know people talk about it.

that gap youre referencing doesnt mean much. some coins arent struck 100% center but unless its super distressed it isnt worth much.

I'd say step 1 would be to get a scale and weigh the coin. a 1990 zinc penny should weigh 2.5 grams +/- a little for how worn it is or maybe its rolled thick, but 2.5g is the standard.

if it weighs 2.5g or about you know its a zinc penny.

My thoughts are somebody found a way to remove the copper outer layer without damaging the coin leaving just the zinc underneath, which is silver.

I have a 1957 $1 Silver Certificate, but from what I read they are super common.

If it were just off center I'd say there'd be a bigger gap at the bottom. It may be easier to see in the second pic (without flash) there's almost an inner 'ridge' like it was hit twice or something even though the image in the center doesn't appear blurry. Maybe it's just me but the text seems ever so slightly elongated at the top to fill in the gap I was talking about. The back is the same way.

What's a silver dollar worth these days? You won't believe this but I found it in the parking lot at work a few years ago. There's always a bunch of trash from the deli blowing around, and that day a quick flash caught my eye.
