I'm a developer and I've recently become interested in moving my career towards game development. However, the general consensus between coworkers and friends is that the hours are horrendous. I've heard it compared to the working conditions at Amazon warehouses.

I can imagine things are hectic leading up to a release, but I can't imagine them being like that all the time.

Are hours for game developers truly that awful?

It seems so. It's the reason why I moved away from the industry in the first place and found an interest somewhere else when I saw that documentary of one day in the development of MK: Deadly Alliance. When I saw that Ed Boon when in at 6:30am and left at 9:00pm, I went "Fuck that. I got a life."

Off-topic: You really can't type **********ck on here? How about you censor better GameFAQs.

It depends on the developer. Indie devs are less stressful to work for.

Crunch time will be pretty much living in the office and not seeing your friends and family for a couple months, with no overtime pay.

The Team Bondi (L.A. Noire) stuff is a good example for how bad it can be for bigger studios.

You always hear those stories about them having to live at the office, crunch 100 hour work weeks, etc. and I've always wondered ... why? Like why constantly give yourselves impossible deadlines?

Because the workers love what they do, and employers will never not take advantage of that.

That dude seems completely out of touch with reality. Its like he has no concept of efficiency.

Game devs gotta unionize or some shit like that. The conditions for them are bullshit.

Anyway, someone said it above, but indie devs are usually less stressful to work for.

Combined with this topic, and reading more into it, it looks like my goal of becoming a full time game developer is dead.

I didn't realize the length of some crunches, and how severe they can be. Also, finding out about the post release layoffs was a real eye opener.
